NEW DELHI: Apple's iPad Air with M4 supports one external display at up to 6K resolution and 60Hz. Its USB-C connector carries DisplayPort video and USB 3 data at up to 10Gbps. Those are separate capabilities, and the cable, adapter and monitor must support the connection you want to make.

Start with the connection, not the shape of the plug

A USB-C connector does not tell you everything about the cable attached to it. Apple's support guide specifically calls for a cable capable of high-bandwidth connections when using a high-resolution display. A cable already used to charge another device is therefore not enough evidence that the complete display connection will meet the Air's maximum specification.

The practical check is to identify the monitor's input and the cable's supported video connection before blaming the tablet for a blank picture or an unexpected resolution. For a desk shared with a laptop, this also means checking the existing dock rather than assuming that every socket on it has the same role.

USB-C display output and HDMI follow different routes

The Air's native wired video output uses DisplayPort over USB-C. A compatible display can connect through that route, while an HDMI screen needs an appropriate adapter. Apple's support document describes HDMI 2.0 adapters capable of carrying 4K video at 60Hz from the M4 Air.

Do not read the tablet's 6K headline as a guarantee that any HDMI adapter will deliver that resolution. The output path has its own limits. Keeping the monitor input, adapter specification and tablet specification together is more informative than looking only for the highest number printed on an accessory box.

Apple also adds a specific qualification for its USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter: the Home Screen and apps appear at 1080p and 60Hz on HDMI, while video playback can switch to match content up to 4K at 60Hz. That helps explain why a video and the Home Screen can look different on the same connected television.

Mirroring is different from gaining more workspace

Apple's guide distinguishes a mirrored image, an app's dedicated second-screen experience and an extended workspace on supported models. A successful physical connection is only part of the question. The next is what the software you are using actually does with the connected screen.

For a student presenting slides, mirroring may be sufficient. For someone keeping reference material beside a writing app, the desired behaviour is different. Test the actual app arrangement you intend to use, including how you will control it, before treating a monitor connection as a replacement for your normal computer workflow.

The two Air sizes share the connection limit

Apple publishes the same external-display ceiling for the 11-inch and 13-inch Air with M4. Choosing the larger built-in screen does not create an additional external-display entitlement in that specification. Its main distinction for this use is the amount of screen space available when the tablet is away from the desk.

The M4 Air has 12GB unified memory. Apple positions the generation for multitasking and creative work, but the port specification remains a separate constraint. A faster chip does not remove the need for a compatible cable or increase the number of external displays Apple lists.

Who this setup is for
