Harsh Weather Forces BHU Mountaineering Team to Turn Back 300 Metres Short of Friendship Peak Summit

VARANASI — Demonstrating remarkable resilience and sound judgment under pressure, a 14-member expedition from the Mountaineering Centre of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) successfully navigated a safe descent after severe weather forced them to halt their summit bid on Friendship Peak in Himachal Pradesh. The team was forced to turn back just 300 metres short of the 17,352-foot summit.
Months of Rigorous Preparation
The ambitious expedition was the culmination of months of grueling physical and technical training. Under the expert guidance of seasoned instructors Balram Yadav and Shivnarayan Yadav, the 14-member squad underwent extensive conditioning to prepare for the volatile environments of the higher Himalayas.
The team set out with high spirits, well-equipped to handle the technical challenges of the peak, which is located in the Pir Panjal range of Himachal Pradesh.
Facing nature's Fury at 16,400 Feet
As the team pushed higher into the upper sections of the mountain, weather conditions deteriorated rapidly. The mountaineers found themselves battling an intense combination of:
Blinding, heavy snowfall
Incessant freezing rain
Sub-zero, high-velocity winds
Despite the escalating adversity, the team pushed forward through sheer grit, successfully scaling up to an altitude of approximately 16,400 feet. However, with the final ridge in sight and visibility dropping to dangerous levels, the instructors made the critical call to halt the ascent.
A Lesson in Mountaineering Discipline
Recognizing that the safety of the team outweighed the glory of the peak, instructors Balram Yadav and Shivnarayan Yadav prioritized the lives of the climbers and initiated a retreat.
While falling just 300 metres short of the summit is a heartbreaking conclusion to months of preparation, mountaineering experts have lauded the decision. In high-altitude climbing, knowing when to turn back in the face of unpredictable weather is considered the ultimate test of a climber's maturity and discipline. The entire 14-member contingent has since returned safely to base camp without any reported injuries.
