Hanging Power Line Sparks Panic in Varanasi’s Chauka Ghat

VARANASI — Residents of the Nai Basti locality in Chauka Ghat, Varanasi, have raised serious alarms over an unaddressed infrastructure hazard that has been threatening public safety for several months. A low-hanging overhead power line stretched across a narrow residential street has turned into a persistent hazard for the neighborhood.
Repeated Complaints Ignored
According to local residents, the high-voltage wire has gradually sagged over time, dropping dangerously close to the street level. Despite the visible risk, community members claim their repeated appeals to the local electricity department have completely fallen on deaf ears.
Lack of Response: Locals state they have registered multiple formal complaints with electricity department officials over the past few months.
Unresolved Danger: Despite regular follow-ups, no ground technicians or inspection teams have been dispatched to tension or elevate the line.
Growing Fears of an Accident
The narrow street serves as a primary thoroughfare for the closely packed neighborhood, compounding the anxiety of families living in the vicinity. Residents highlight that the lane experiences heavy foot traffic throughout the day, significantly increasing the probability of a fatal accident.
"Children, senior citizens, and daily pedestrians use this exact spot every single day. With the monsoon season bringing waterlogging and moisture, our concerns about an accidental electrocution have skyrocketed." — A worried local resident.
