Free High-Speed BSNL Wi-Fi Service Launched at BHU’s Sir Sunderlal Hospital and Trauma Centre

VARANASI — In a major step toward expanding digital healthcare access, a free high-speed public Wi-Fi service was officially inaugurated at Banaras Hindu University’s (BHU) Sir Sunderlal Hospital and the apex Trauma Centre.
The new digital infrastructure—launched through a joint collaboration between the Varanasi Municipal Corporation and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL)—was formally dedicated to the public by Varanasi Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari. To log on, users can simply scan custom QR code boards set up by the municipal corporation across the newly created Wi-Fi zones.
Empowering Patients and Attendants
Speaking at the inauguration, Mayor Tiwari emphasized that seamless internet access has transitioned into a basic utility in the modern era. The service is specifically targeted at assisting the thousands of patients and their accompanying relatives who visit the premier medical institution daily.
With this facility, attendants can seamlessly handle online hospital registrations, retrieve electronic health reports, access emergency digital banking services, and maintain uninterrupted video and voice contact with family members.
High-Speed Network Specifications
According to Anil Kumar Gupta, Principal General Manager of BSNL Varanasi, the infrastructure has been heavily optimized for high-density public areas. Key technical highlights include:
Daily Allocation: Every user is entitled to up to two hours of completely free internet usage per day.
High-Speed Delivery: The network is built to deliver data transfer speeds of up to approximately 320 Mbps.
High-Density Coverage: The system architecture has been explicitly engineered to maintain stable bandwidth and prevent dropouts even during peak hospital footfall.
Driving Digital Healthcare
Lauding the initiative, BHU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi remarked that robust digital connectivity has become a core component of modern medical delivery. The administration noted that future plans include looking into expanding the service to map out a round-the-clock free access framework.
Senior medical administrators, including Prof. K.K. Gupta (Medical Superintendent of Sir Sunderlal Hospital) and Prof. Saurabh Singh (In-charge, Trauma Centre), expressed their gratitude to the Varanasi Municipal Corporation and BSNL, noting that the system marks a major turning point for real-time patient care coordination at the university hospitals.
