Elements of AI's Introduction to AI is a free online course from the University of Helsinki and MinnaLearn, and its digital completion certificate is also free. It is intended for people who want to understand AI without needing coding experience. Completing the exercises and the peer-review requirements matters: reading the material alone does not automatically produce a certificate.

The university's course overview describes self-study resources, interactive content and practical tasks. The course's current FAQ provides the more detailed timing and completion rules. Those official pages were checked on 27 October 2026 at 22:58 IST.

What does the Elements of AI course cover?

The public course outline has six chapters, moving from the meaning of AI through problem solving, real-world AI, machine learning and neural networks to the implications of the field. It combines explanations with exercises. This gives a beginner a route through the concepts behind AI applications, rather than just a list of things to type into a chatbot.

The early material asks how AI should be defined and explores related fields and philosophical questions. Later sections cover search and games, probability, classification and regression. The final chapter considers future claims and societal implications. These subjects help explain why an AI course can involve reasoning and arithmetic even when coding experience is not required.

For an Indian learner comparing short courses, the syllabus is the most useful starting point. If your immediate aim is drafting a notice or summarising a document, a product-specific guide will address that task more directly. This course is an option for understanding the ideas behind such tools. It should be described on a CV by its actual course name and completion status.

How long does Elements of AI take?

The official workload FAQ estimates around four to eight hours for each part of Introduction to AI. It recommends trying to finish within six weeks, while allowing learners to work at their own pace. Some exercises can take up to 45 minutes because they involve thinking, drawing or returning to the explanation.

The university overview gives an approximate overall workload of 30 hours. Treat these figures as planning estimates, not a guaranteed completion time. Background knowledge, time spent on the linked material and the difficulty of individual exercises will affect how quickly you move through the course.

One practical way to use the six-week suggestion is to allocate a chapter to each week and leave separate time for answering and reviewing exercises. A learner with only two short study sessions available should look carefully at the four-to-eight-hour estimate before choosing a deadline. Finishing the reading and finishing all assessment steps are different milestones.

How do you get the free certificate?

The official completion requirements specify at least 90% of exercises completed and 50% correctness. Correctness is calculated as an average across completed exercises, with each exercise given equal weight. Validated text responses count as fully correct.

Peer-reviewed exercises have an additional process. For exercises 4, 15, 23, 24 and 25, the FAQ says you must give at least three reviews and receive at least two reviews with a sufficiently high score. Those exercises count as complete only when the review conditions are satisfied. Responses with low scores may require manual checking, which can extend the wait.

The certificate FAQ says the certificate appears at the top of the profile page after the answers have been processed and confirmed. It is digital and issued in the language in which the course was taken. Check the spelling of your name before using the download control.

The same FAQ cautions against promising a certificate to someone else by a fixed date because peer review can take time. A student applying for an internship should therefore leave room between completing the coursework and needing proof of completion. The provider does not give an instant-certificate guarantee.

Is Building AI the same free certificate course?

No. Introduction to AI and Building AI have different certificate arrangements. The official FAQ says Building AI content is free, but its optional shareable certificate requires payment. Do not carry the free-certificate promise from Introduction to AI across to that follow-up course. Check the full course title when choosing what to study.
