Dhoomil Statue Restored in Korauti After Damage Sparks Anger

The damaged statue of poet Sudama Pandey “Dhoomil” has been restored at Korauti in Varanasi’s Rohania area after the vandalism triggered anger among residents and readers. The administration acted after District Magistrate Satyendra Kumar issued directions, while police began the separate task of identifying who damaged the memorial and why.
Dhoomil’s writing is woven into the modern literary identity of eastern Uttar Pradesh. Born in Khewali in the Varanasi region, he gave post-Independence Hindi poetry a blunt, questioning voice that refused ornamental comfort. A public statue in his home landscape is therefore more than street furniture. It tells students and passers-by that a village near them produced a writer whose language reached far beyond it.
The reinstallation was attended by Rohania MLA Sunil Patel, district panchayat chairperson Poonam Maurya, MLC Dharmendra Rai, district panchayat member Sunil Singh and local BJP office-bearer Alok Pandey, according to the local report. Lohta station in-charge Digambar Upadhyay and Kotwa outpost in-charge Gaurav Singh were also present. Officials and public representatives condemned the damage and said those responsible would face legal action.
Restoring the statue quickly helped defuse immediate tension, but repair is not the end of the story. Police still need to examine nearby cameras, witness accounts and the timing of the damage. No identity or motive had been officially established when this report was prepared. Social-media claims naming supposed culprits should not be treated as evidence, particularly when a cultural symbol can become a convenient trigger for political rumour.
The episode also raises a practical question about how Varanasi cares for memorials outside its most visited tourist zone. A simple inventory of statues, plaques and literary sites, paired with periodic inspection, lighting and local custodianship, would be more useful than waiting for damage to provoke attention. Schools and cultural groups can help by organising readings and explaining who is represented, turning a monument into a living point of public memory.
Dhoomil’s work confronted power, institutions and the distance between public language and lived reality. Protecting his likeness should not reduce him to a ceremonial icon. The better tribute is to keep his poems available, discuss their difficult questions and maintain the places associated with his life.
Korauti residents have welcomed the restoration, but they are also entitled to a clear account of the investigation. A repaired statue closes the visible wound. Identifying the vandals, preventing recurrence and renewing public engagement with Dhoomil’s writing would complete the response.
