DDU Railway Division Sets July Records in Track Renewal and Freight Wagon Overhaul

Two records set by the railway division next door to Varanasi are less glamorous than a new train launch, but they sit closer to the everyday question passengers actually ask: how safely and reliably will the railway run?
The Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Division of East Central Railway says its engineering department renewed 10.63 track kilometres in July 2026 on the Grand Chord section. The work involved replacing old and life-expired sleepers with a mechanised Track Relaying Train, commonly called a TRT machine.
According to the division, that is its highest monthly track-renewal figure so far. It was also the second-highest performance reported across Indian Railways for the month, behind Secunderabad Division. The Grand Chord is among the country’s busiest rail corridors, carrying dense passenger and freight traffic, so maintenance windows are both necessary and difficult to manage.
A TRT machine turns what once required a large, slow-moving manual operation into a closely coordinated mechanical process. It removes old sleepers, positions new ones and supports more consistent alignment. The machinery does not make the job effortless—traffic blocks, ballast, welding and follow-up inspection still have to line up—but it allows a division to renew more track within limited working windows.
Divisional railway manager Uday Singh Meena credited the engineering team and described timely sleeper replacement as central to track reliability, smoother operations and punctuality. The real value of the July number will show over time through inspection results and the condition of the renewed stretches.
The second record came from the Wagon Care Centre at DDU Junction. It completed routine overhaul of 918 BOXN freight wagons during July, which the division described as the highest monthly output by any division in Indian Railways. The previous national mark of 905 wagons was also held by DDU Division and was set in December 2025.
Routine overhaul is the workshop-level health check freight wagons cannot skip. Components are inspected, repaired and certified before the vehicles return to service. At 918 wagons, the month’s work was equivalent to about 15 closed-circuit freight rakes, improving the availability of wagons for bulk movement.
For Varanasi-region passengers, neither milestone will dramatically change a station concourse overnight. Its impact is quieter: stronger track beneath fast-moving trains and better-maintained wagons sharing the same network. That is infrastructure in its least photogenic, most essential form. The numbers now need to be followed by sustained inspection and safe performance through the next operating cycle.
