Dalmandi Road Widening Project in Varanasi Reaches Sensitive Phase

The ambitious Dalmandi road widening project in Varanasi has now entered a highly sensitive phase, as six mosques located within the project corridor have reportedly come under the ambit of the ongoing demolition and redevelopment drive. Administrative officials associated with the project stated that discussions are currently underway between the district administration and mosque management committees to work toward a mutually agreed solution regarding the dismantling and possible relocation of the religious structures.

According to officials, alternative land arrangements are also being explored in coordination with mosque committees to ensure that the process is carried out peacefully and in accordance with legal procedures. The development has drawn significant public attention due to the historic and densely populated nature of the Dalmandi locality, which remains one of the busiest commercial and residential areas in Varanasi.

The Dalmandi road widening project was launched with the objective of improving traffic movement, reducing congestion, and strengthening connectivity between key parts of the old city. Over the past several months, large-scale demolition activity has been carried out across the area. Officials claim that nearly two-thirds of the overall widening work has already been completed.

Since May 9, demolition operations have intensified further, with multiple residential and commercial structures being cleared continuously by administrative teams. Authorities said compensation has already been provided to several affected property owners, while some old and damaged structures were declared unsafe by civic agencies before demolition.

Among the religious structures reportedly affected by the widening plan are Langde Hafiz Mosque, Sangmarmar Wali Mosque, Nisaran Mosque, Karimullah Beg Mosque, and Ali Raza Mosque. Officials indicated that further action in the area could begin within the next few days under heavy police deployment and security arrangements to maintain law and order.

Local residents and traders continue to closely monitor developments as the project moves ahead. While many people support the widening project for easing traffic congestion and improving urban infrastructure, others remain concerned about the impact on heritage structures and the densely packed local community.

The administration has maintained that the redevelopment work is being carried out under proper legal guidelines and that efforts are being made to complete the project with coordination and minimal disruption.
