Canva Magic Write can draft text from a prompt, rewrite existing copy and generate presentation notes. In the desktop editor, Canva’s current help page directs users to Quick actions, then Magic Write, with the slash key offering another route to Quick actions. The useful starting point is a small writing task with supplied facts, rather than a request to invent a complete, authoritative document.
For a teacher, student or small organisation, that task might be a clearer event notice, a short explanation or speaker notes for an existing slide. This guide follows the public help instructions checked on 6 November 2026. The steps were checked against that documentation; no account was opened and no generated output is presented as a live test.
| What you have | Route to use |
|---|---|
| A brief or idea | Generate text from a prompt |
| A draft paragraph | Use the existing text controls |
| A presentation | Generate notes from page content or a custom prompt |
How to use Canva Magic Write
Open a design or create one. Use Quick actions and choose Magic Write, or type the slash character to open that shortcut. Enter the request, then select the purple arrow to generate text. The current Canva help article identifies that arrow as the generation control, so older instructions that refer only to a button labelled Generate may look different.
When the result appears, decide whether to insert or copy it. The interface also offers ways to request another version or add a refinement. Stop generation or Esc can end processing. Read the result before placing it into a finished design: a paragraph that fits neatly inside a text box can still contain a wrong date or an unsupported statement.
Original prompt for an event notice: “Draft a 90 word notice for parents using only the details below. State the date, venue, start time and what pupils should bring. Use plain English and a polite tone. If any detail is missing, add a question for the organiser below the draft. Do not invent entry fees or permission requirements.” Paste the approved details after the instruction.
This template is for organising supplied information. It should not be used to create facts about a real event. Compare the draft with the original notice, especially where the model has joined separate instructions into a sentence. A missing exception can matter more than a spelling mistake.
How to rewrite existing text in Magic Write
The current desktop help instructions begin with the text in the editor. Right-click the relevant text or use the text controls, then choose Magic Write from the toolbar. Options include rewriting, fixing spelling, continuing and shortening. Choose the operation that matches the problem: reducing length and changing tone are separate editorial decisions.
After reviewing the result, the documented choices include replacing the original, adding the new version below it or copying it. Adding below is useful when you want to compare both versions before deciding. Keep an unchanged reference copy when a document contains official names, conditions or dates that must survive an edit.
Original prompt for simpler copy: “Rewrite the paragraph below for a first year college student. Keep every factual statement, qualification and date. Use shorter sentences, define unfamiliar terms in brackets and keep the result under 140 words. List anything you cannot simplify without changing the meaning.” This is a writing exercise, not a guarantee that the model will preserve every qualification.
Original prompt for a shorter announcement: “Reduce this draft to 60 words for a notice board. Retain the event name, deadline, eligibility and contact details exactly. Remove repeated background sentences. If those essentials cannot fit, explain the conflict instead of dropping one.” The purpose is to make an explicit priority list before asking for compression.
Canva Magic Write presentation notes
In a presentation, select Notes and then Generate notes. Canva documents two starting points: using the content already on the page or giving a custom prompt. Choose page content when the slide itself should be the basis. Choose a custom prompt when the notes need additional instructions about the audience or delivery style.
Original prompt for speaker notes: “Write speaker notes for this slide for a college seminar. Explain the listed points in clear English. Separate an opening sentence, the main explanation and a closing transition. Do not add statistics, quotations or research references that are absent from the slide.” Check the resulting notes against the slide and any supporting source before rehearsing.
The help page also describes controls for improving notes, including shortening and rewriting. Use them to adjust delivery after the facts are settled. Reading the notes aloud is a practical editorial check: replace phrases you would not naturally say and remove explanations that repeat the visible slide without helping the listener.
What if Magic Write is missing or usage is limited?
First compare the controls with the current help page rather than an old screenshot. Canva explicitly says its AI usage limits have changed. This guide therefore does not repeat an older fixed free quota or promise unlimited access. Check the usage information shown in your own account and follow the current help links for the feature.
