To export Claude data, open Settings, choose Privacy and select Export data in the web app or Claude Desktop. Anthropic sends a download link to the email address associated with your account once the export is ready. That link expires 24 hours after delivery, and you must be signed into the account to download through it.
| Item | What to expect |

This guide follows Anthropic's Export your Claude data help page, checked on 5 November 2026. The documented controls were checked against that public page. We did not access an account, request an export or inspect anyone's private chat history.
How to export Claude chat history
Use the web app or Claude Desktop for the request. In the privacy settings, look for Export data and select it. The official page says exports are available to individual users on Free, Pro, Max and Ultra plans. It describes the export as containing account user data and conversations, rather than a public link to a selected discussion.
The request starts a processing step. Anthropic warns that there may be a small delay before the export is generated, without giving a guaranteed completion time. Leave room for that delay if you need the archive before changing your working arrangements. Repeated requests should not be treated as a documented way to make processing faster.
Check the inbox belonging to the account from which you made the request. The relevant address is the one associated with that Claude account, which may differ from an address you use for job applications or personal correspondence. Once the message arrives, open the download while signed into the correct account.
The 24 hour period begins with delivery of the link. It is not described as a period starting when you first read the message. If the link has expired, the official solution is to repeat the export process and request another one. Allow for processing again rather than assuming an old message can be reactivated.
Why is the Claude export button missing?
Work accounts have additional controls. On Team and Enterprise plans, an organization Owner or Primary Owner must enable the option allowing members to export their own data. A member who cannot see Export data should check whether this organization setting is enabled before treating the missing button as a software fault.
The member export has a narrower documented scope: it contains the member's own chats and excludes the contents of uploaded files. That distinction matters if you used Claude to discuss a report, lesson plan or spreadsheet. Keep the original documents in your normal storage arrangement instead of assuming a chat archive replaces every source file.
Primary Owners use a separate route. Anthropic says they do not see Export data in their personal settings because they export the organization's data from Organization settings, then Data and privacy. An individual trying to preserve personal conversations should not confuse this organization wide function with the member export.
Can exported Claude data move to another account?
Anthropic says exported data cannot be imported into another personal Claude account, and it does not support migration between personal accounts. Downloading an archive therefore preserves a copy for your own reference; it does not provide an official restore button that recreates your conversations inside a different personal account.
Joining a Team or Enterprise workspace is treated separately in the help page, which points to a direct personal account migration process. The practical distinction is to decide what you need before you begin: a record to keep, or an eligible workspace move. They are different tasks with different official instructions.
Does exporting Claude data delete chats?
Export and deletion are separate controls. Anthropic's conversation deletion guide explains how to remove a chat from the sidebar or Chats and tasks menu. It says deleted conversations leave visible history immediately and are deleted from backend systems within 30 days. Exporting does not perform those deletion steps.
Before deleting material you still need, finish the download and check that your saved record is usable for your purpose. Store the archive with the same care as the original conversations, especially if they contain other people's information.
