To remove a photo background in Canva's editor, select the photo and choose BG Remover from the toolbar, then wait for processing. If the result cuts into the subject or leaves unwanted edges, reselect BG Remover and use the erase and restore brushes. Canva's current help page places Background Remover in paid plans, so check access in your account before building a project around it.

This walkthrough follows Canva's official background removal instructions, checked on 7 November 2026 at 22:00 IST. The practical inspection examples below are editorial suggestions, rather than claims of a measured success rate.

How to remove a background in Canva

Open the design and select the actual photograph you want to change. Use BG Remover in the editor toolbar and let Canva finish. Review the whole result before continuing with layout work. A cutout that looks acceptable as a small thumbnail may show missing hair, an interrupted sleeve or a piece of the old background when placed at the intended size.

You can also start from Projects without opening a design. Canva's documented route is Projects, then Images, then the photo's More menu. Choose Edit image and select BG Remover under Tools. This is useful when preparing an existing upload for several designs. Confirm that you are editing the intended file, especially when a folder contains several versions of the same photograph.

For a practical review, compare the subject's outline with the original. Look at fine details, gaps between limbs, transparent objects and areas where foreground and background have similar colours. Those are inspection suggestions, not a list of situations in which Canva guarantees failure. Decide whether the remaining detail is important at the size the audience will actually see.

How to fix missing edges with erase and restore

After the automatic removal, select BG Remover again. Choose Erase to remove material that should not remain, or Restore to bring back part of the original image. Adjust the brush size and drag over the area. Canva documents a Show original image option so you can compare the edit with the source, along with Undo and Redo controls for brush strokes.

Use small changes when correcting a narrow edge. A large brush can be suitable for an obvious leftover patch, while a smaller brush gives more control around a thin outline. Work through one part of the subject at a time and compare it with the original before moving on. This suggested approach keeps the review manageable; it does not replace the tool's own processing limits.

For a school brochure portrait, for example, check that a shirt collar remains intact and that a pale sleeve has not disappeared into the old backdrop. Then place the cutout on the planned page colour. A rough edge may be more apparent there than against the editing canvas. Review the image again at the intended output size before accepting it.

Can Canva remove backgrounds in bulk?

For a whole folder, go to Projects, hover over the folder, open More and choose Remove background. Canva says it creates a new folder with “Edited” added to the name, leaving the original folder and photographs unchanged. This gives you a useful comparison point when reviewing a batch: inspect the results against their originals instead of assuming every image completed equally well.

For selected photos inside a folder, open the folder, tick the relevant images and use BG Remover from the bottom toolbar. Canva says those edited results are added to the same folder. The distinction matters for organising work: processing a whole folder and processing selected images do not put the results in exactly the same place.

The bulk feature handles up to 50 images at a time and one folder at a time. A folder containing more than 50 images can show a greyed out option. Only uploaded images are processed; Canva library photographs and designs are skipped. If some results are missing, check for errors and skipped material before repeating the whole batch.

What photo limits and AI options should you check?

The help page says the photo tool works with files under 9MB and is unavailable for vector images. Photographs above 10MP are downscaled after background removal. Keep that resolution change in mind when preparing material for a large layout. Review the final export in its intended use rather than judging quality only from the original upload's dimensions.

Canva AI provides another documented route: upload a photo through the plus button and ask it to remove the background. For an original, narrowly scoped request, try: “Remove only the background from this uploaded portrait and keep the person's clothing and full outline.” The purpose is to specify the editing task. Review the result in the editor and use the brushes where necessary.

Background removal and choosing a replacement backdrop are separate decisions. Canva's background guide explains adding colours, gradients and other backgrounds. For related preparation, see our guides to Canva Magic Write, presentation scripts in Gemini Canvas and working documents in Claude Artifacts. Keep the edited photo and its accompanying text consistent with the purpose of the finished design.
