Arjuna Award eligibility combines international sporting performance over the previous four years with leadership, sportsmanship and discipline. A medal alone is not the entire test. The Department of Sports scheme also permits eligible sportspersons to apply themselves through the online portal, without obtaining a recommendation from an outside authority.
The official Arjuna Awards scheme available on the department's portal is marked as amended on 14 October 2024. It distinguishes the regular Arjuna Award from the lifetime category and explains how applications are checked before selection. This guide describes that scheme, rather than announcing an application window for a particular year.
| Question | What the scheme says |
|---|---|
| Main performance period | Previous four years for the regular award |
| Other qualities | Leadership, sportsmanship and discipline |
| Recommendation needed? | Eligible athletes may self apply |
| Regular award assessment | 80 percent medal based weightage and 20 percent committee assessment under the specified criteria |
| Lifetime category | International record and contribution after the sporting career |
Who is eligible for the Arjuna Award?
The regular award is intended to recognise achievement at international level. The scheme covers disciplines associated with the Olympic Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, World Cups and World Championships, as well as cricket or equivalent recognised international tournaments. It also includes indigenous games and sport for athletes with disabilities.
In years when the Olympic, Commonwealth or Asian Games take place, the scheme allows achievements in those Games and other international tournaments up to their conclusion to be considered. This matters when reading the four year requirement: the document provides a specific treatment for the relevant Games year, rather than asking readers to assume a fixed cut off in every circumstance.
The lifetime category has a different purpose. An athlete must have performed well internationally and continued contributing to the promotion of sport after the active sporting career. Leadership, sportsmanship and discipline remain part of the requirement. A regular award application and a lifetime application therefore should not be treated as interchangeable forms.
How are Arjuna Award selection marks calculated?
For the regular award's specified assessment framework, medal performance carries 80 percent weightage. The remaining 20 percent comes from committee assessment, including the profile and standard of events and qualities such as fair play, team spirit and discipline. The medal component uses the scheme's event tables and adjustment rules, rather than a simple count of podium finishes.
Points must also be distinguished from final marks. The scheme illustrates proportional scoring: the athlete with the highest calculated medal points receives 80 marks, while other eligible athletes receive proportionate marks. It contains separate adjustments for team events. Comparing two athletes solely by their raw medal totals can therefore miss how the official calculation works.
The lifetime assessment instead assigns 70 percent weightage to sporting achievements across the career and 30 percent to the committee's assessment of contribution after retirement and the specified personal qualities. Readers checking their own category should use its corresponding criteria. The regular award's four year performance calculation cannot simply be copied into a lifetime case.
How can a sportsperson apply for the Arjuna Award?
The scheme allows eligible athletes to self apply when applications are invited through the online portal. Start with the Department of Sports portal and read the notification for the relevant award year. A functioning portal or an older notice is not evidence that a fresh application window is currently open.
Employed applicants must obtain the required employer report covering vigilance and disciplinary matters and the other declarations specified in the scheme. Applicants who are not working or are self employed must submit the prescribed undertaking. Successful submission generates a unique registration number for future communication. Self application removes the recommendation requirement, not these documentary checks.
The Sports Authority of India verifies sporting achievements against official records, and the ministry seeks an anti doping report for shortlisted athletes. The scheme says a completed doping sanction does not permanently prevent consideration, but achievements during the sanction period are excluded. An athlete with a pending or ongoing enquiry will not be considered under that provision.
What does an Arjuna Award winner receive?
The published scheme specifies a statuette, certificate, ceremonial dress and a cash award of Rs 15 lakh, checked at 29 October 2026, 21:45 IST. This is an award provision, not a payment promised to an applicant. Eligibility, scrutiny and the selection process must still be completed, and the relevant year's official notification should be consulted before submitting documents.
Readers following athletes across disciplines can distinguish award selection from sporting rules and rankings through our guides to ICC rankings calculations, hockey penalty corners and cricket net run rate. Those systems measure or regulate competition; the award scheme separately assesses an athlete's record and the qualities it specifies.
