Varanasi, June 21, 2026: A total of 134 Agniveers took oath during a ceremonial Passing Out Parade at the 39 Gorkha Training Centre in Varanasi on Saturday, marking the completion of their training and the beginning of their service journey with the Indian Army.
Passing Out Parade Held in Varanasi
According to reports and defence updates, the parade was held at the 39 Gorkha Training Centre and reviewed by Zubin A. Minwalla, DCIDS (Operations), Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, and Colonel of the 9 Gorkha Rifles.
The ceremony marked an important moment for the recruits and their families. Passing Out Parades are not only formal military events but also emotional milestones, as trainees move from the training ground to operational responsibilities.
Training Included Modern Warfare Exposure
The Agniveers completed 24 weeks of basic and advanced combat training. Reports said the course placed emphasis on discipline, physical conditioning, field craft, weapon handling and mental agility.
A significant part of the training also involved exposure to modern battlefield technologies. The recruits were trained in the operation and use of drones and Unmanned Aerial Systems, including roles linked to surveillance, reconnaissance and counter-drone awareness.
This focus reflects the changing character of warfare, where small drones, remote sensors and fast battlefield information can play a major role in frontline decision-making.
Families Witness Proud Moment
The parade was attended by families, veterans and invited guests. Reports said the march past and oath-taking ceremony created a strong emotional atmosphere for parents and relatives who had come to see the young soldiers complete their training.
Several trainees were also recognised for performance in different training areas, including overall performance, physical training, drill, firing and tactics. These awards are part of the military tradition of acknowledging excellence during training.
Why It Matters
For Varanasi, the 39 Gorkha Training Centre remains a major defence institution with a long association with Army training. The latest parade adds to that legacy while also showing how training modules are adapting to new technologies.
The induction of 134 Agniveers is significant not only for the armed forces but also for the families whose sons now move into disciplined military service. It also connects Varanasi's defence footprint with India's wider shift towards a younger, technology-aware force.
