MS Dhoni arrived at a fitness centre in Mahmoorganj during his July 2016 visit to Varanasi, as fans gathered outside to catch a glimpse of the former India captain.

VARANASI: On a humid Sunday evening in July 2016, Mahmoorganj witnessed a kind of excitement usually reserved for an international cricket stadium. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, then captain of India’s limited-overs cricket team, had arrived in Varanasi, and word had spread that he would be visiting a local gym.

By the time Dhoni reached the area, hundreds of people had gathered along the road and outside the fitness centre. Young fans waited with mobile phones in their hands, hoping for a photograph, an autograph or simply a brief glimpse of one of Indian cricket’s biggest stars.

The visit is sometimes remembered as an entirely unexpected appearance. Contemporary reports, however, indicate that news of Dhoni’s arrival had circulated beforehand. He was expected at the gym at around 4 pm, and fans had begun assembling several hours in advance. His eventual arrival at approximately 7 pm only intensified the anticipation.

A Sunday Evening Mahmoorganj Still Remembers

Dhoni travelled to Varanasi by road from Ranchi on Sunday, July 10, 2016. Before heading to Mahmoorganj, he reportedly stopped at the Chitaipur residence of his friend and manager, Arun Pandey.

When his vehicle finally entered Mahmoorganj, chants of “Dhoni, Dhoni” rose from the crowd. The gathering spilled from the gym premises onto the adjoining road, making crowd control and traffic management increasingly difficult for the police and private security personnel present there.

Local reports from the time described a sea of fans stretching from the road to the fitness centre. The congestion affected traffic on the Sigra–Mahmoorganj route for nearly two hours, while some enthusiastic spectators climbed walls and other elevated spots to see Dhoni enter the building.

The appearance was connected to SportsFit Health Club and Fitness Studio, a fitness venture associated with Dhoni. Although it had a promotional purpose, the evening quickly became much more than a routine brand engagement for the people waiting outside.

An Hour of Stretching, Weights and Cycling

Once inside the gym, Dhoni did not limit himself to posing for photographs or inspecting the equipment. He completed a proper training session.

According to reports published immediately after the visit, Dhoni worked out for approximately an hour, from around 8 pm to 9 pm. His session included stretching, weight training and cycling. While he exercised inside, fans continued to wait outside, hoping he would meet them before leaving.

Dhoni largely kept his distance from the media during the visit. After completing his workout, however, he spent time with some of the supporters who had waited for hours. Autographs were signed, selfies were taken and a few fans managed brief conversations with the cricketer.

He left the gym at around 9 pm with Arun Pandey. Photographs and videos from that evening continued to circulate long after his departure, preserving an unusual moment when one of the country’s most recognised sportsmen trained at a neighbourhood fitness centre in Varanasi.

From the Gym to a Classroom

Dhoni’s visit continued the following morning.

On Monday, July 11, he attended a programme at Delhi Public School in Varanasi, where he interacted with students, parents, school staff and young cricket trainees. Reports said he spent close to two hours on the campus, including a motivational interaction lasting approximately 25 minutes.

The subject was not limited to cricket. Dhoni spoke about balancing education and sport, questioning the common assumption that students who perform well on the field cannot also succeed academically.

His message was grounded in time management. He advised students to plan their days, prepare a calendar and give focused attention to both studies and physical activity. Rather than studying continuously for several hours without concentration, he suggested shorter and more disciplined periods of learning.

Dhoni also described sport as an important way of handling stress and building confidence. Confidence, he told the gathering, did not appear automatically; it came from preparation and the knowledge that one had worked seriously towards a goal.

Parents were part of his message as well. He urged them to ensure that children experienced sport on actual fields and playgrounds instead of restricting their engagement to games played on phones and tablets.

For Dhoni, sport was not merely a recreational activity. It taught young people how to compete, accept mistakes, work with others and pursue victory without abandoning fair play.

A Visit That Became Part of Varanasi’s Sporting Memory

The two-day visit came at a time when public curiosity surrounding Dhoni was particularly intense. Interest was growing around the forthcoming biographical film M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, which was released later that year.

Yet in Varanasi, the enduring memory was not of a film promotion or a formal cricketing event. It was of Dhoni arriving in Mahmoorganj in his Land Rover, quietly completing his workout as an enormous crowd waited outside, and then speaking to young students the next morning with the same restrained confidence that had earned him the name “Captain Cool.”

A decade later, photographs and videos of that evening continue to resurface on local social media pages. They offer a reminder of the excitement Dhoni could create without stepping onto a cricket field—and of the Sunday evening when an ordinary workout turned Mahmoorganj into the centre of Varanasi’s attention.
