VARANASI — With the holy month of Sawan rapidly approaching, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) has launched an extensive, multi-departmental preparation drive to ensure a safe, organized, and spiritually enriching experience for the millions of Kanwariyas and Shiva devotees expected to flood the city.

The civic administration is aggressively upgrading public infrastructure and deploying dedicated sanitation teams along all major pilgrimage paths leading to the core religious zones.

Prioritizing Pilgrim Safety and Road Infrastructure

To facilitate a smooth journey for the barefoot Kanwar pilgrims, the municipal corporation is carrying out comprehensive road repair and maintenance work on a priority basis. Crews are working to eliminate potholes, level uneven stretches, and clear debris along vital transit corridors.

In tandem with these upgrades, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath recently held a high-level review meeting in the city, explicitly instructing the Public Works Department (PWD) and the VMC to ensure that any roads previously dug up for laying utility pipelines are completely restored and resurfaced well before the influx begins.

Key Amenity Checkpoints Along Pilgrimage Routes

The civic body has mapped out a network of essential services to sustain the massive crowd footprint throughout the month-long religious festivities:

  • Temporary Camps: Multi-purpose help desks and rest pavilions are being erected at key entry and transit points across Varanasi.

  • Clean Drinking Water: Dedicated water tankers and mobile purification units will be stationed at close intervals along the pedestrian corridors.

  • Sanitation Drives: Continuous, round-the-clock cleaning shifts have been scheduled to maintain hygiene, alongside the deployment of mobile public facilities.

  • Safety & Logistics: The administration is setting up functional 'lost and found' centers, emergency health camps, disaster management outposts, and free locker facilities near major congregational hubs.

Special Measures at Kashi Vishwanath Dham

Given the unprecedented footfall concentrated around the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, the administration is establishing unique crowd management frameworks. During the review, the Chief Minister directed officials to devise a separate, dedicated route for local residents to ensure their daily routines are not entirely disrupted by the pilgrim influx. Furthermore, authorities have been cautioned to install structural barricading between critical stretches like Maidagin and Godaulia in a manner that protects the accessibility and interests of local traders.

In a significant move to preserve the religious sanctity and cultural character of the heritage zones, the VMC has also initiated a phased plan to relocate hundreds of meat, poultry, and fish shops operating within the core city limits to designated zones on the outskirts.
