Rs 140 Crore Sohna Highway Underpass Proposed

GURUGRAM: The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority has proposed an underpass across Sohna Highway to connect the master roads of Sectors 66, 67, 68 and 69, with a preliminary cost estimate of more than Rs 140 crore.

The link is intended to join sector roads currently separated by NH-248A and provide another cross-highway route between the Sector 58-67 side and the Sector 68-80 side. At present, much of this local movement depends on the Vatika Chowk underpass and the Southern Peripheral Road.

GMDA officials have described the project as preliminary. It is expected to be placed before the authority meeting, likely by the first week of September. If the authority approves the concept, GMDA will need to approach the National Highways Authority of India because the proposed structure would cross the highway within NHAI's right of way.

The Rs 140 crore figure is tentative, not a sanctioned final cost. Detailed engineering, structural investigation and utility mapping can change the estimate. Land and traffic-management requirements also need to be established before a tender or construction timeline becomes credible.

What the link is meant to solve

Fast-growing residential and commercial sectors on both sides of the highway generate short local trips that are often forced onto a longer arterial route. A direct crossing could reduce pressure on Vatika Chowk and the SPR, especially during office and school peaks.

The design must account for more than cars. Pedestrians, cyclists, buses and service vehicles need a safe way to cross or interchange. An underpass that speeds one movement but creates unsafe merging or an inaccessible pedestrian edge can shift congestion rather than resolve it.

Drainage will be a critical design test. Gurugram's underpasses repeatedly face water accumulation during intense rain. The proposed structure needs a catchment calculation, independent pumps with backup power, a receiving drain with adequate capacity and a maintenance plan that remains funded after construction.

Approval is only the first gate

If the proposal clears GMDA, coordination with NHAI and utility owners will determine the practical schedule. Water, sewer, electricity, gas and telecom lines can add months and cost when they are discovered late. A verified underground-utility survey should come before the final design.

Construction itself would affect highway and sector traffic. Authorities should publish a staged diversion plan and preserve access for nearby societies and emergency vehicles. The Vatika Chowk route cannot absorb unlimited additional traffic while another crossing is under construction.

The proposal addresses a real connectivity gap, but it should not yet be described as approved, funded or under construction. The next milestones are authority consent, NHAI concurrence, detailed design and a final estimate.

For residents of Sectors 66 to 69, the useful measure will be whether the project creates a reliable all-weather local connection without adding another flood-prone low point. That requires scrutiny now, while the design is still flexible, rather than after concrete is in the ground.
