Varanasi Daalmandi Road Widening Drive Intensifies

VARANASI: The ambitious Daalmandi road widening project in Varanasi has entered another major phase as the administration prepares to carry out demolition action on 45 additional buildings in the densely populated old city area. The latest operation comes after earlier phases of the campaign saw bulldozers used on 62 properties identified within the widening corridor.

Ahead of the drive, authorities have transformed the entire locality into a high-security zone. Heavy police deployment, paramilitary personnel, PAC teams, and senior administrative officials have been stationed across Daalmandi to ensure that the operation proceeds peacefully and without disruption. Drone cameras are also being used for aerial surveillance and real-time monitoring due to the sensitivity of the area.

Officials stated that a total of 187 structures fall under the scope of the Daalmandi road widening project, which is aimed at easing chronic traffic congestion, improving accessibility, and strengthening civic infrastructure in one of Varanasi’s busiest commercial zones.

The redevelopment initiative has attracted widespread public attention because several traditional and religious structures are also expected to come under administrative action during upcoming phases. Authorities indicated that structures linked to both temples and mosques located within the approved widening alignment may face demolition or structural modification as per official plans.

According to officials, all legal procedures, including surveys, marking of affected properties, and issuance of notices, have been completed before initiating the demolition process. The administration has appealed to residents, traders, and shopkeepers to cooperate during the operation.

Speaking about the arrangements, ACP Atul Anjan Tripathi said that extensive security measures have been implemented to maintain law and order throughout the demolition drive.

The Daalmandi widening project is being viewed by authorities as a significant step toward modernizing infrastructure in the old city while improving movement for residents, businesses, emergency services, and tourists visiting the historic heart of Kashi.
