Varanasi Authorities Hold Route March Ahead of Muharram; Issue Guidelines and 10-Foot Cap on Taziyas

VARANASI — In a major push to ensure public safety and communal harmony ahead of Muharram, the Varanasi Police and district administration conducted a high-level, comprehensive route march through key areas of the city.

The security sweep, which commenced from the Chowk Police Station and concluded at Nai Sadak, was designed to review ground-level preparedness, evaluate logistical arrangements, and build confidence among local residents ahead of the upcoming processions.

On-the-Ground Inspection

The march was led personally by Police Commissioner Mohit Agarwal and District Magistrate S. Rajalingam. The top officials systematically inspected the designated procession routes, paying special attention to bottleneck areas and high-traffic zones. Among the areas evaluated was the recently widened Dalmandi sector, a critical stretch for local movement.

During the march, the leadership interacted directly with field officers, emphasizing the need for constant alertness, tight coordination, and proactive crowd management.

Strict Enforcement of Guidelines

To guarantee a peaceful and orderly observance, the district administration has finalized a set of strict operational guidelines for organizers. Key directives include:

  • Taziya Height Limits: Taziyas will strictly be permitted up to a maximum height of 10 feet.

  • Audio Restrictions: A complete ban has been imposed on DJs and high-volume sound systems to prevent noise disruption and potential flashpoints.

  • Strict Accountability: Authorities have issued a stern warning that the responsibility for any violation—particularly the movement of oversized Taziyas—will fall squarely on the respective organizers and Taziyadars.
