VARANASI, INDIA — The water level of the River Ganga in Varanasi is witnessing a continuous upward trajectory, touching 62.91 metres according to recent measurements. Central Water Commission monitoring stations indicate that the river is swelling at an incremental rate of 1 to 2 centimetres per hour, signaling heightened alert levels along the riparian corridors of eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Upstream stretches across Prayagraj and Mirzapur have also recorded parallel surges in discharge, driving a sustained influx of water into Kashi’s riverbanks.

Low-Lying Corridors on Alert as Ghat Footprints Submerge

With monsoon precipitation continuing across the upper catchment basins, local administrative teams and the River Police are keeping a close vigil on vulnerable zones:

• Impact on Iconic Ghats: Rising waters have inundated lower steps and platforms across several prominent ghats, altering daily routines for pilgrims and local boat operators.
