Varanasi ATS Probe: NEET Aspirant Questioned Over Suspected Online Radicalisation Links, Father Speaks Out

Varanasi, April 16, 2026: An Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) operation in Varanasi has drawn significant attention after an 18–19-year-old NEET aspirant was questioned as part of an ongoing investigation into a suspected online radicalisation network.
The joint operation, conducted by teams from the Uttar Pradesh ATS and Maharashtra ATS, took place in the Adampur area of the city. The student, reportedly the son of a local doctor, was interrogated for several hours while officials searched the premises and seized multiple electronic devices, including mobile phones, a laptop, and other digital equipment for forensic analysis.
Investigation Linked to Multi-State Network
According to officials, the case appears to be connected to a broader network operating across multiple states. The investigation reportedly originated from a Mumbai-based case, where digital evidence pointed towards possible links extending into Uttar Pradesh.
Authorities suspect that certain online platforms, including encrypted messaging apps like Telegram and WhatsApp, may have been used to circulate questionable or extremist content. However, officials have emphasized that the investigation is still at a preliminary stage, and no conclusive findings have been made public.
Father’s Statement Raises New Questions
The student’s father, Dr. Arif Ansari, has come forward with a statement, offering a different perspective on the situation. Speaking to the media, he said his son had been under intense academic pressure while preparing for NEET and was also dealing with mental health challenges.
He claimed that between November and March, his son was approached by suspicious social media accounts that attempted to influence him. According to the father, the student later blocked these accounts, but prior interactions—such as chats, likes, or comments—may have attracted investigative scrutiny.
No Arrest, Further Questioning Scheduled
Officials have clarified that the student has not been arrested. However, he has been summoned to appear before the Maharashtra ATS in Mumbai on April 22 for further questioning as part of the ongoing probe.
Digital Evidence Under Examination
Investigators are currently analyzing digital records, including chat histories, call logs, and possible financial transactions, to determine whether there were any direct links to extremist groups or if the student was inadvertently exposed to such content online.
Growing Concerns Over Online Influence
The case underscores increasing concerns around online radicalisation and the vulnerability of young individuals to digital influence. Experts stress the importance of awareness, early intervention, and responsible use of social media platforms to prevent misuse.
As the investigation continues, authorities maintain that all angles are being examined carefully, urging the public to avoid speculation until verified information is made available.
