Varanasi Closes Classes 1 to 8 on September 3 Amid Heavy-Rain Alert

VARANASI: All schools in Varanasi district will suspend classes from Grade 1 to Grade 8 on Thursday, September 3, after the district administration issued a one-day closure order in view of persistent rain, waterlogging and the forecast of further heavy rainfall.

The direction applies across school systems: basic education council institutions, government and aided schools, recognised private schools and campuses affiliated with CBSE, CISCE and other boards. District Basic Education Officer Bhupendra Singh issued the order on the instructions of District Magistrate Satyendra Kumar.

The closure is for students in Classes 1 to 8. Teachers and non-teaching employees of basic education council schools have been told to report for departmental work, including Aadhaar, direct-benefit transfer and U-DISE tasks. Parents should not interpret staff attendance as a sign that children are expected on campus.

Several school buildings are also being prepared for use as relief camps. With families displaced from riverbank and low-lying neighbourhoods, classrooms and halls may be needed for temporary shelter, food distribution and essential services. Running normal classes in those buildings would be impractical even if surrounding roads were clear.

The decision recognises a risk that begins before a pupil reaches the gate. Waterlogged lanes can conceal open drains and potholes, shared autos may become overcrowded when routes change, and school buses can stall on flooded stretches. Younger children are less able to judge current, depth or electrical hazards. A one-day closure reduces unnecessary movement while officials assess conditions.

Schools should communicate directly with parents about any assignments or online activity and avoid mixed messages through unofficial class groups. The district order covers the specified grades, but families with older children should check their own institution's verified notice because senior classes may follow separate instructions.

Parents should also be cautious about treating the holiday as an opportunity to visit the ghats or flooded areas. The same conditions that closed schools make riverfront steps, drains and low roads unsafe. Children should remain away from standing water and exposed wiring, and emergency numbers should be kept accessible.

The administration said weather and flood conditions are being monitored. Any extension or change must come through a fresh official notice; social-media forwards without a signed order should not be relied upon.

For Thursday, the position is clear: Classes 1 through 8 remain closed across Varanasi district. The pause is brief, but it gives families, schools and relief teams one less movement to manage during a difficult spell of rain.
