UP to Upgrade 21 State Highways into Four-Lane Corridors, Boosting Connectivity Across 18 Districts

LUCKNOW — In a major move to modernize its regional road network, the Uttar Pradesh government is preparing to upgrade 21 state highways into four-lane corridors. The sweeping infrastructure initiative aims to enhance inter-district connectivity, boost regional economies, and drastically improve road safety across the state.
The Public Works Department (PWD) has completed field surveys for the proposed highway links, and the comprehensive plan has been submitted to the state cabinet for final budget allocation and formal approval. The entire expansion project is targeted for completion by December 2027.
Mega Project to Interconnect 18 Districts
The highway expansion is designed to bridge critical connectivity gaps across 18 key districts, seamlessly linking economic and agricultural hubs within the Purvanchal (Eastern) and Awadh (Central) regions.
The districts set to benefit directly from this infrastructural overhaul include:
Eastern UP / Purvanchal: Varanasi, Jaunpur, Chandauli, Pratapgarh, Sultanpur, Deoria, Kushinagar, Sonbhadra, and Amethi.
Central & Western UP: Lucknow, Hardoi, Farrukhabad, Jalaun, Moradabad, Bulandshahr, Meerut, Sambhal, and Muzaffarnagar.
Widening Scope & Speed Projections
The primary objective of the PWD initiative is to eliminate chronic traffic bottlenecks by widening existing thoroughfares that can no longer sustain modern transit volumes.
