UP Police Orders Strict Action Against Personnel Posting Objectionable Reels on Social Media

The Uttar Pradesh Police has launched a strict crackdown against police personnel found violating the department’s Social Media Policy-2023 by posting objectionable or inappropriate reels and videos online.
A circular issued on May 15 under the signature of Additional Director General (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash directed all district units and police departments to identify such personnel and initiate immediate departmental action against them. The directive was issued following approval from the Director General of Police (DGP).
According to the circular, despite detailed guidelines issued earlier on February 8, 2023 regarding the responsible use of social media by serving and trainee police personnel, several officials continue to upload reels and videos that negatively impact the image and dignity of the Uttar Pradesh Police.
Officials stated that such activities not only affect professional discipline but also damage the public credibility of the police force. The department emphasized that police personnel are expected to maintain professionalism both on and off duty, especially while wearing official uniforms.
The police headquarters has instructed authorities to preserve records of violating posts, including saving URLs and maintaining archived evidence for departmental proceedings. In addition, monthly action-taken reports will now have to be submitted in a fixed format to senior officials.
Over the past few years, several police personnel across Uttar Pradesh have gained attention on social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook by posting videos in uniform, often while on duty. Despite previous warnings and guidelines, some officials reportedly continued making reels, prompting the department to adopt stricter enforcement measures.
The latest directive reflects the Uttar Pradesh Police’s attempt to regulate social media conduct within the force and maintain the professional image of the department in the digital era.
