UTTAR PRADESH: Lekhpals are expected to sit in village secretariats from July 1 under a state-level governance move aimed at bringing revenue-related services closer to villagers.

The arrangement is intended to reduce the need for residents to visit tehsil offices for every small revenue matter. If implemented properly, villagers should be able to get basic guidance and follow-up support at the village secretariat level.

Revenue Services Closer to Villages

Lekhpals play a key role in land records, local verification, revenue entries and field-level reports. Their regular presence in village secretariats can help residents track applications, seek updates and understand the next step in revenue-related work.

The move is especially important for elderly residents, farmers and daily wage workers who lose time and money travelling repeatedly to tehsil offices. A local sitting arrangement can make the process more predictable.

Implementation Will Matter

District-level implementation will depend on rosters, attendance monitoring, public information and coordination with panchayat secretariat staff. Villagers should check locally for the fixed days and timings of the lekhpal's presence.

Some regional reports from eastern Uttar Pradesh have already highlighted the need for strict monitoring so that the order does not remain only on paper. The administration may have to ensure that lekhpals are available as scheduled.

Useful for Varanasi Rural Areas

For rural parts of Varanasi and nearby districts, the system can help residents access revenue services closer to home. However, citizens should continue to use official channels and keep receipts or reference numbers for applications.

The next few weeks will show whether the village secretariat sitting system becomes a practical relief for villagers or requires stricter enforcement.
