NEW DELHI: Triumph's current India Speed 400 specification gives a recurring service interval of 16,000 km or 12 months, whichever comes first. Owners should put both limits in their maintenance diary and confirm the initial service separately from the handbook supplied with their motorcycle. The distance headline is not permission to ignore the calendar.

Make a reminder that includes the calendar
The simplest useful record has the service date, odometer reading, next distance checkpoint and next time checkpoint together. Ask the workshop to confirm both next limits when it completes the job. A reminder that records only kilometres is incomplete for a motorcycle whose official interval includes a time condition.
Consider a rider who uses the Speed mainly for weekend outings. The motorcycle could reach its time deadline while remaining well short of the distance limit. A rider covering longer regular journeys could reach the distance checkpoint first. These are examples of how an earlier-limit rule works, not estimates of what either rider will pay or how their engine oil will perform.
Do not use the recurring interval to calculate the first appointment after delivery. The public headline does not replace the initial-service instructions attached to the motorcycle. Ask for the correct handbook and service record at handover, then have the dealer identify the initial due date and distance in writing. This avoids applying a routine interval to the running-in period by mistake.
Check the engine specification behind the familiar name
The model still carries the Speed 400 name, but the current India technical page lists 349 cc, while the India enquiry page independently displays the same capacity, 37 PS and 32 Nm. For an owner ordering maintenance items, the model name alone is therefore a poor substitute for the chassis identity, model year and applicable parts record.
The useful ownership context is specific to this roadster: the current listing combines a liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with a six-speed gearbox. A workshop request should identify the motorcycle accurately rather than borrowing a parts list from an older brochure or a similar Triumph. Give the workshop the vehicle identity and ask it to confirm compatibility before approving replacement parts.
Our existing Scrambler 400 X and Speed 400 price comparison is separate background reading. A comparison of purchase listings cannot establish which handbook or service procedure belongs to a particular motorcycle. Keep those questions distinct when preparing for an appointment.
Distinguish a service interval from a service bill
The published interval does not provide an itemised workshop quotation. Request a written estimate for the scheduled work, with any extra investigation or replacement on a separate line. Ask which operations are due under the applicable maintenance chart and which have been proposed because of the motorcycle's observed condition. That distinction is more useful than assuming every appointment has a fixed total.
Bring a short description of any concern, including when it occurs and whether it has changed since the previous visit. For example, a control complaint should be written as the behaviour you experienced rather than a demand for a guessed repair. A clear job card lets the workshop assess the symptom while keeping routine maintenance visible as its own task.
Ask before authorising an addition that was not included in the original estimate. Record whether it is necessary to complete scheduled work, recommended following inspection or simply an optional purchase. This is a practical way to review a bill; it is not a claim that Triumph's public product page establishes a universal approval process or labour rate.
Retain the warranty and maintenance records separately
The Speed 400 product page lists a two-year unlimited-mileage warranty. That headline does not mean maintenance is free, nor does it decide whether an individual complaint qualifies as a defect. Retain the actual warranty certificate and service records together, and ask the authorised workshop to assess a potential claim under the applicable terms.

Before collecting the bike, compare the invoice with the approved work and have the next service limits confirmed. Save the dated record where it can be found at the next appointment. The published interval is useful only when it becomes a clear maintenance plan for the exact Speed 400 in your garage.
