Poster Politics in Varanasi: Akhilesh Yadav Depicted as Lord Krishna Holding Constitution on 53rd Birthday

VARANASI — Political symbolism has taken center stage in Uttar Pradesh as Samajwadi Party (SP) workers in Varanasi marked the 53rd birthday of party chief Akhilesh Yadav by unveiling a striking promotional poster. The visual depicts Yadav in the avatar of Lord Krishna, notably holding a copy of the Constitution of India in his hand instead of the traditional Sudarshana Chakra.

The birthday celebrations, organized by local party loyalists, featured religious rituals, including a ceremonial havan (fire ritual) and community prayers. Attendees gathered to pray for the former Chief Minister's longevity and to manifest the party’s return to power in the high-stakes 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

The "Modern Dwapar Yuga" Analogy

Explaining the ideological thought behind the visual, senior local SP leader Ajay Fauji drew direct parallels between epic mythology and current state politics.

"Just as Lord Krishna fought relentlessly against tyranny, structural injustice, and unrighteousness during the Dwapar Yuga, Akhilesh Yadav is raising his voice for public welfare, democratic protections, and social justice in the present era," Fauji stated during the gathering.

The strategic inclusion of the Constitution in the deity's hand reflects the wider opposition alliance’s ongoing national narrative, which positions the protection of constitutional rights as a core legislative priority.

The Rise of Deity Avatars in UP Politics

The controversial poster has ignited a fresh round of political debate across Varanasi and the wider state. The development comes closely on the heels of another recent campaign that similarly used religious iconography, where Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was portrayed in a Parashurama-inspired avatar.

This growing trend of using revered spiritual figures for contemporary messaging adds a complex, highly localized dimension to election campaigns in the state. As the political framework tightens ahead of the 2027 assembly elections, both ruling and opposition factions are increasingly turning to familiar cultural symbols to mobilize their respective voting blocs and build an early advantage.
