NEFT and RTGS both move money between bank accounts in India, including on holidays. Their main difference is settlement: NEFT processes transfers in batches at half hourly intervals, while RTGS settles each transfer individually in real time. RTGS requires at least Rs 2 lakh. RBI sets no minimum for an ordinary account based NEFT transfer and no upper ceiling for either system, although your bank can impose channel limits.

That distinction matters when an account screen offers several transfer buttons. A system being available all day does not mean every transfer has the same eligibility, charge or expected credit time. This guide uses the RBI NEFT FAQ and the RTGS FAQ updated on 14 October 2026, checked on 4 November 2026 at 21:50 IST.

NEFT vs RTGS: which is faster?

RTGS does not wait for a batch of payments to accumulate. Under normal circumstances, RBI says the receiving branch gets funds in real time, and the beneficiary bank must credit the account within 30 minutes of receiving the transfer message. Real time settlement and the final entry in the customer's account are related stages, rather than an identical timestamp.

NEFT sends the instruction through the bank's service centre into the next available settlement batch. RBI's FAQ gives an expected credit timeline of two hours from batch settlement. Count that period from settlement, not simply from the moment you pressed the transfer button. Keep the transaction acknowledgement if the recipient needs to establish when the instruction was made.

Both systems operate around the clock throughout the year. A bank branch still has its own opening hours, and an online service can have maintenance or security restrictions. Availability of the national settlement system does not remove a bank's beneficiary activation process or its own transfer controls.

NEFT and RTGS limits: what Rs 2 lakh means

A hypothetical Rs 75,000 account transfer is below the RTGS minimum, but can be sent through NEFT subject to the bank's rules. A Rs 3 lakh transfer meets the RTGS minimum and is also within NEFT's system level rules. There is no RBI requirement to split that Rs 3 lakh into smaller NEFT transactions.

However, a bank may allow less through a particular online channel or impose a daily cap. Check the limit shown for your account and beneficiary. RBI's absence of an upper ceiling is not a promise that every bank will accept an unlimited customer instruction. Cash funded NEFT without a bank account is a separate case: RBI limits those remittances to Rs 50,000 per transaction.

NEFT vs RTGS charges

Online NEFT transfers from savings bank accounts carry no customer charge under RBI's instructions. Inward NEFT credit is also free. For other outward NEFT transactions, the RBI ceilings are Rs 2.50 up to Rs 10,000; Rs 5 above Rs 10,000 and up to Rs 1 lakh; Rs 15 above Rs 1 lakh and up to Rs 2 lakh; and Rs 25 above Rs 2 lakh. Applicable GST is additional.

For RTGS, inward transactions are free. The outward charge ceiling is Rs 25 for Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh and Rs 50 above Rs 5 lakh, excluding tax. Banks may charge less. These are regulatory maximums, so use the bank's actual tariff and the charge displayed before authorisation rather than assuming the maximum will always apply.

What details should you verify before sending?

Have the beneficiary's account number, name, bank, branch and IFSC ready. RBI describes IFSC as an 11 character identifier with letters identifying the bank, a zero in the fifth position, and the branch identifier at the end. Obtain it from an official bank record or the beneficiary's cheque details rather than guessing from a branch name.

The account number needs particular care because credit is based on that number. RBI's current RTGS FAQ also describes a free beneficiary account name lookup facility. Where offered, use it to check the registered name before authorising payment. RTGS settlement is final and irrevocable, so a confirmation screen deserves a deliberate check.

How to track a delayed transfer

Keep the amount, date, account details and reference number. For RTGS, the Unique Transaction Reference is a 22 character code. Contact your bank or its customer facilitation centre if credit is missing, rather than initiating a second payment before the first has been traced.

For related account checks, read our guides to bank statement transaction descriptions, failed UPI payment refunds and how deposit insurance counts accounts. Each concerns a different rule; a UPI refund deadline should not be substituted for an NEFT or RTGS settlement timeline.
