Mother’s Day in Varanasi: Elderly Women at Old Age Home Share Stories of Loneliness and Abandonment

VARANASI: While people across the country celebrate Mother’s Day by expressing love and gratitude toward their mothers, an emotional and heartbreaking reality emerged from the Jyoti Training and Old Age Home operated by the Kashi Leprosy Service Association in Varanasi.
The ashram, home to several elderly and physically challenged women, witnessed only a brief one-day visit by a family member on the occasion of Mother’s Day. For many residents, however, the day served as a painful reminder of the emotional distance that now exists between them and their children.
Speaking with DALIMSS News, several elderly women living at the ashram shared stories filled with pain, loneliness, and longing. Some residents revealed that their children had not visited or even contacted them for years. Others became emotional while remembering the sacrifices they once made to raise their families and provide their children with better opportunities in life.
Many of the women said that after dedicating their lives to nurturing their children, they now spend their old age battling isolation and emotional neglect. Their stories reflected not only personal grief but also a growing social concern surrounding the treatment of elderly parents in modern society.
Caretakers at the ashram stated that emotional support and companionship are often more valuable to the residents than material gifts or celebrations. For many elderly mothers living there, even a simple phone call or short visit from family members becomes a rare and deeply emotional moment.
The emotional scenes from the ashram on Mother’s Day have sparked conversations about family values, responsibility toward aging parents, and the importance of maintaining emotional bonds beyond symbolic annual celebrations.
The plight of these elderly women stands as a powerful reminder that honoring parents should not be limited to a single day, but should remain a lifelong commitment of care, respect, and companionship.
