MCG Councillors Flag Sanitation Gaps in House

GURUGRAM: Ward councillors told the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram House that road sweeping, door-to-door garbage collection and lifting from secondary collection points remain irregular in several neighbourhoods, while the commissioner said two new agencies are scheduled to start door-to-door work from November or December with 857 vehicles across two clusters.

The House meeting, held on Friday and reported over the weekend, saw councillors question both ground delivery and the number of sanitation tenders relative to visible work. Dharambir Bhangrola, councillor from Ward 28, said Rajiv Colony, Om Nagar and Shanti Nagar continue to face poor sanitation because of a severe shortage of sweeping staff and inadequate deployment of door-to-door collection vehicles. He said vehicles arrive only after repeated calls and asked why the corporation was paying agencies if work was not being carried out properly. He also flagged the Beri Wala Bagh secondary collection point, alleging garbage was left uncollected for several days.

A resident identified as Rajesh Kishan said garbage was overflowing onto roads, that waste had not been lifted for several days, and that rain left wet refuse giving off a foul stench. Officials told the House that the long-term tender for road sweeping is under technical evaluation. Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya said the agencies under the new door-to-door contracts must deploy 50 percent of mandated vehicles in the first month and reach full deployment by the second month, and that sanitation performance should improve in the months ahead.

An MCG official said monsoon weather slows waste-carrying trucks and makes dumping at Bandhwari harder. On normal days, around 70 to 80 dumpers make trips to the landfill, the official said, but the number can fall to around 30 to 35 during rainfall. With lighter rain in the days before the meeting, trips had risen again, with 75 dumpers reported on Wednesday and 79 on Tuesday in the briefing shared with councillors.

Officials also said development work at the Khandsa and Carterpuri secondary collection points had diverted waste to Beri Wala Bagh. The corporation has asked the agency that moves garbage from Carterpuri to Bandhwari to lift from Beri Wala Bagh as well, so that the overflow site can be cleared more quickly. Councillors pressed for closer monitoring of contractor attendance and route coverage until the new fleet is on the road.

Sanitation has been a live political and civic issue after the statewide safai karamchari agitation earlier this monsoon season. The House discussion focused on service gaps that remain even as workers return and new contracts are processed. MCG did not announce an interim sweeping roster change beyond pointing to the tender under evaluation and the November-December start window for the two cluster agencies.
