Portable does not describe the same carrying experience

The most immediately useful distinction is physical. The Emberton III is the lighter speaker, while the Middleton II makes a more substantial addition to a bag. That difference matters whether the journey involves walking to a metro station, carrying a laptop alongside the speaker or simply moving it between rooms.

A handle or strap does not remove the weight of the product. It changes how the load is held. Marshall includes a strap in the Middleton II's listed box contents. The selected Black and Silver Emberton III does not include one; Marshall identifies Brown as the Emberton III finish supplied with a strap.

This is why photographs of different colours deserve attention. A carrying accessory shown with a particular finish is not automatically part of every package carrying the same model name. The specific variant and its box-contents list are more precise references than a generic lifestyle photograph.

The larger speaker has a different set of controls

Marshall lists dedicated bass and treble controls on the Middleton II, alongside its multidirectional control knob. It also specifies a wired AUX input and a charging-bank function for a phone. These change what the speaker can connect to and how its sound can be adjusted without reaching for the source device.

For a desk shared by a phone and another audio source, a physical input is a distinct feature from Bluetooth. Likewise, a charging-bank function is about supplying power to another device. Neither feature alone establishes better sound quality, and the higher price should not be treated as an acoustic test result.

Both models carry Marshall's True Stereophonic branding and include a microphone for calls. The shared branding describes an approach to distributing sound around the speaker. It does not mean that the cabinets, drivers or listening results are identical. The comparison here is based on published equipment, without a listening-test score.

Read battery time alongside the charging routine

The smaller Emberton III has the longer advertised playtime figure. That is a useful reminder that size, price and claimed endurance do not always move together. These remain manufacturer claims rather than measured results from the same playlist, room and listening level.

The charging figures also describe different waits. A full recharge and a brief top-up answer different questions: one concerns restoring the battery, the other concerns getting enough listening time before leaving home. Neither should be silently substituted for the other when interpreting a product's charging description.

The shared IP67 rating is accompanied by a defined test condition: Marshall describes immersion at a depth of 1 metre for 30 minutes. That is a bounded water-resistance statement. It should be read in those terms rather than as a promise that every outdoor accident or kind of liquid exposure produces the same outcome.

Where this comparison sits in a home-audio budget

These are portable speakers with their own batteries. Readers mapping out other categories can use our Sony speaker and soundbar guide and Samsung speaker price list as separate catalogue references. The names of those categories do not make their products interchangeable with the Marshall pair.

Our Portronics speaker price list provides another view of the wider market. For the models examined here, the lower displayed price belongs to the Emberton III. Middleton II's wired connection, physical tone controls and phone-charging function give the comparison substance beyond appearance and the Marshall badge.
