Manikarnika Ghat Redevelopment Draws Mixed Reactions Over Heritage and Change

Varanasi: Redevelopment work at the historic Manikarnika Ghat is underway as part of a ₹17–18 crore infrastructure project aimed at improving facilities for pilgrims and families performing last rites. The project includes better access roads, paved pathways, ramps, seating areas, organised wood storage zones, improved drainage, and enhanced safety and cleanliness measures.

Authorities say the initiative focuses on convenience, crowd management, and hygiene while ensuring smooth movement around one of the world’s oldest cremation sites. However, recent demolition activity linked to the project has triggered concern among locals and heritage observers, with allegations that historic structures may have been affected. The district administration has ordered an inquiry and clarified that no intentional damage to protected heritage sites has been carried out.

Dalimss News visited the spot and spoke to local residents and pilgrims. Most people said they support development, but stressed that heritage and traditional character must be preserved.

“We are not against development, but Manikarnika Ghat’s identity should remain untouched,” said a local resident. “Facilities are needed, but ancient structures and rituals must be protected,” another visitor added.

As work continues, the Manikarnika Ghat redevelopment highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing modern infrastructure with cultural and historical preservation in Varanasi.
