For Class 1 admission to a Kendriya Vidyalaya, a child must be six years old but less than eight on 31 March of the academic year in which admission is sought. KVS expressly says a child born on 1 April should also be considered. These are the age rules in its admission guidelines for 2026-27 and onwards, subject to any later amendment issued by the organisation.
| Point to check | Class 1 rule |
|---|---|
| Minimum age | 6 years |
| Ordinary upper limit | Less than 8 years |
| Reference date | 31 March in the admission academic year |
| Express exception | Children born on 1 April should also be considered |
| CwSN provision | Maximum age may be relaxed by 2 years |
Parents can read the official KVS document page, which lists the guidelines published on 18 March 2026. The age test is separate from the application schedule. Meeting it does not establish that a registration window is currently open or that a seat is available.
How to calculate KVS Class 1 admission age
First identify the academic session for which the child is applying. Then calculate the child's age on 31 March in that admission year using the birth certificate. Do not use the date on which you read an advertisement, complete an online form or visit the school. Those dates may fall on either side of the prescribed reference date.
For example, in the 2026-27 session the relevant date is 31 March 2026. A child born on 15 April 2020 has not completed six years on that date. A child born on 1 April 2020 is covered by the guideline's express provision for 1 April births. These examples illustrate the cutoff; they do not create a general grace period for birthdays later in April.
The upper boundary needs equal care. The table says “less than” eight years, so parents should not read it as permission for every child who is already eight. Use the actual date of birth and check both boundaries. For children close to either boundary, keep the guideline and birth record together when preparing the application.
What age relaxation is available?
Part A, paragraph 4 of the 2026-27 admission guidelines says the maximum age limit may be relaxed by two years for Children with Special Needs, described as CwSN. The wording concerns the maximum age. It should not be treated as a blanket reduction in the minimum entry age.
The documents section provides for certification of special needs by the civil surgeon, rehabilitation centre or another competent authority defined by the Government of India. It also addresses cases where the disability is visually apparent to the principal, with the parent advised to obtain the relevant certificate. Read that provision alongside the age rule rather than assuming a general exception applies to every application.
Age eligibility also does not replace other admission conditions. KVS says its guidelines apply from 2026-27 onwards, with specified exclusions for its schools abroad and Dr Rajendra Prasad Kendriya Vidyalaya at President Estate, New Delhi. Families should check the applicable institution and any subsequent official update before using a general calculation.
Which birth certificate and documents should parents prepare?
For Class 1, KVS asks for proof of age through a birth certificate issued by an authority competent to register births. The listed examples include notified area councils, municipalities, municipal corporations and extracts from village panchayat birth records. The guidelines also recognise the specified military hospital and defence service records.
The original date of birth certificate is to be returned to the parent after verification. Prepare the required self attested copies and keep the original available for that check. A date typed into an online form must match the documentary record; an accepted registration entry does not remove the need for verification.
The document list also includes proof of residence and applicable category certificates. Where service priority is claimed, the service certificate should show transfers in the preceding seven years and bear the required signature and stamp. These documents establish different parts of the application, so a birth certificate alone is not a complete admission file.
Can children of private employees apply to a KV?
Yes. The procedure section explicitly says admission is open to all and is not restricted to central government employees. Different priority categories regulate admission. In civil and defence sector KVs, children outside the first four listed categories appear in the fifth category. Project and higher learning institution KVs have a separate priority structure.
Registration for Class 1 takes place online when the admission portal is live, and registration forms are free. KVS also says mere registration confers no right to admission. Check the official admission section for the relevant session's schedule and notices, rather than treating this age explainer as an invitation to apply now.
