Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) provides financial assistance linked to childbirth, with the amount depending on the state's programme category and whether the beneficiary lives in a rural or urban area. The National Health Mission lists a mother's institutional delivery payment of Rs 1,400 in rural areas and Rs 1,000 in urban areas in Low Performing States. In High Performing States, the corresponding amounts are Rs 700 and Rs 600 for eligible women. Registration should begin with the local ASHA, ANM or government maternity facility.
| Programme category | Mother, rural | Mother, urban |
|---|---|---|
| Low Performing States | Rs 1,400 | Rs 1,000 |
| High Performing States | Rs 700 | Rs 600 |
These are the mother's amounts, not the combined programme expenditure shown in some tables. NHM separately lists an ASHA package of Rs 600 in rural areas and Rs 400 in urban areas. Adding the worker's incentive to the mother's payment produces a misleading answer to the question of how much the mother receives.
Who is eligible for Janani Suraksha Yojana?
The national JSY scheme page says all pregnant women delivering in government health centres qualify in Low Performing States. Its list includes Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Rajasthan, Odisha, described on the page as Orissa, and Jammu and Kashmir. This is the programme's classification, not a statement about an individual hospital's quality.
For High Performing States, the national page specifies women from Below Poverty Line, Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe households delivering in government facilities. Private hospital eligibility needs particular care: a hospital must be accredited for the scheme. A private hospital providing maternity services does not, by that fact alone, establish a JSY claim. Ask the facility and district health office to confirm its accreditation and your category before relying on assistance.
An important historical correction appears in the ministry's 13 May 2013 order. It removed minimum age and number of children conditions for institutional deliveries in High Performing States and for home deliveries across states and Union Territories. Older summaries retaining those conditions should be checked against that order. This was a 2013 rule change, not an announcement made in November 2026.
How to register and which documents to prepare
Speak to the ASHA or ANM during pregnancy registration and ask whether your record identifies you as a JSY beneficiary. Keep the pregnancy or maternal health record, identity information, bank account details and any applicable category evidence ready. The exact supporting documents and payment workflow should be confirmed with the state programme or maternity facility, rather than assumed from another state's form.
Maharashtra's official implementation guidance dated 17 April 2025 describes the process in practical terms. The ANM or staff nurse issues a JSY card after registration. Bank account details, Aadhaar information, the RCH portal number and caste details are recorded on it. The state guidance also asks health staff to help eligible women who need assistance with an account or Aadhaar enrolment.
In Maharashtra, the published guidance provides for payment by direct benefit transfer within seven days after delivery. That is a state implementation provision, not a national processing guarantee for every applicant. Families elsewhere should ask their facility for the applicable payment timetable and the record needed to follow up a missing transfer.
How to check a pending JSY payment
Start with the facility where the delivery and JSY registration were recorded. Ask staff to check the beneficiary record, bank details and payment processing stage. Keep the JSY or RCH reference and the delivery record available. A bank statement can establish whether a transfer has arrived, while the programme staff can explain whether it has been approved or needs a correction.
The national scheme page reviewed on 3 November 2026 does not advertise a single nationwide public payment status form, a fresh application deadline or a dedicated national JSY application helpline. Use your ASHA, ANM, facility medical officer or district NHM contact for the local route. Confirm eligibility and the current document list with that office; this guide cannot establish an individual's entitlement.
