IGNOU re-registration is the process for continuing into the next year or semester of a programme. To check progress, use the university's official re-registration portal, confirm the selected courses and retain the submitted form and payment confirmation. If money has been paid but the portal has not updated, IGNOU specifically tells students to wait for a day and check payment status before deciding whether another payment is needed.

There is an important date check before any of those steps. When reviewed on 6 November 2026 at 10:05 pm IST, the portal still displayed the July 2026 session and a last date of 30 September 2026 with a Rs 200 late fee. That displayed date has passed. Its continued appearance is not evidence of a new extension or a fresh application window, and the late fee shown should not be assumed to apply to a future session.

How to use the IGNOU re-registration portal

Start at IGNOU's official re-registration portal. The university's main website also has a Re-Registration link under admission services. Read the session heading and the instructions before moving to the account area. A familiar web address does not remove the need to check which session the screen currently covers.

The public instructions say a student who has not registered on the portal should use New Registration. Enter the correct mobile number and email address, since IGNOU uses them for confirmation and other updates. Someone who has already registered can use their username and password. Do not treat a forgotten password as proof that a new academic admission is required.

If registration is difficult because an OTP does not arrive, the username or password has been forgotten, or contact information needs updating, the portal directs students to their Regional Centre for an account reset or correction of contact details. This is the university's stated support route. A third-party operator cannot replace that institutional account-reset process.

Choose the right courses before checking payment status

Course selection is central to re-registration. IGNOU asks students to read the Programme Guide and choose carefully wherever options are available. It warns that changing courses later can reduce the time available for study. Before payment, compare the selected course codes with the year or semester you are continuing into, rather than selecting a familiar-sounding title.

The official re-registration user manual also explains course selection from the available groups and saving the course details before proceeding. It lists an enrolment number and registered contact details among the information students need. Because the public portal can change over time, use its current instructions for the session while using the manual to understand the underlying sequence.

For a student checking status, two records answer different questions. The submitted form shows what was selected; payment confirmation shows the transaction record. Compare both. A debit message alone does not tell you which courses were chosen, and a course selection screen alone does not establish successful fee payment. IGNOU specifically asks students using an outside service to obtain both the submitted form and payment confirmation.

IGNOU payment deducted but status not updated: what to do

The portal's instruction is precise: do not immediately make a second payment when an online payment has not been updated. Wait for a day, check the payment status and then decide. This advice addresses the gap between making a transaction and seeing it reflected in the system. It does not promise that every delay resolves within a day.

Keep the transaction reference, the time of payment and the portal confirmation, if one has been issued. These records make it easier to explain the problem accurately if further help is needed. Avoid describing a pending update as a confirmed failed payment until you have checked the transaction and the university record.

IGNOU says that if a student pays twice for the same application, one payment will be refunded to the account. The public instruction does not specify a fixed refund period, so there is no basis here to promise a particular number of days. Repeated payments should not be used as a method of refreshing an unchanged status screen.

The listed payment options include cards, net banking and UPI, including BHIM. IGNOU advises students not to share card details or OTPs and, as far as possible, to use their own payment method. If a cybercafe or another outlet assists, check the chosen courses and successful payment yourself and take copies before leaving.

Re-registration is separate from marks and results

A student's academic progress record is a different service. Missing assignment marks should be checked through the IGNOU grade card status guide. Students considering a different qualification can consult our one-year postgraduate eligibility explainer; those considering credit recognition can read the SWAYAM credit transfer guide. Re-registration itself concerns continuation, selected courses and the associated payment for the relevant session.
