NEW DELHI: Hyundai's i20 N Line pairs a 120 PS turbo petrol engine with disc brakes on all four wheels. Its N6 and N8 trims share the central mechanical package, while the equipment differences become more visible in the lights, cabin controls and infotainment. The useful distinction is between the driving hardware and the extra convenience equipment.

What the engine figures actually describe

The brochure lists one turbo petrol engine, with its maximum torque available across a band of engine speeds. That is a different piece of information from the maximum power figure, which is quoted at a particular engine speed. Neither number, by itself, tells a household what fuel consumption it will record on a congested commute.

The manual and dual-clutch automatic are the transmission choices described for the range. The manual gives the driver responsibility for clutch operation and gear selection. The DCT removes the clutch pedal from that daily routine. Treat the gearbox decision as a separate question from whether the extra N8 cabin equipment matters to you.

The braking package is shared

Hyundai's feature matrix lists front and rear disc brakes for both N6 and N8. Electronic stability control, hill assist control, tyre pressure monitoring and a reversing camera with dynamic guidelines are also marked standard for both. These are concrete items to check when comparing trims, rather than relying on the N Line badges alone.

The matrix also gives both versions alloy wheels with the N logo, a twin-tip muffler and a tailgate spoiler with side wings. The black interior, red inserts and branded steering wheel carry the same design theme into the cabin. Moving up the range therefore does not introduce the basic N Line visual identity for the first time.

Where N8 changes daily use

The lighting distinction is more useful than a broad claim that the dearer trim is better equipped. N6 has halogen headlamps in the official matrix, while N8 gets LED headlamps and integrated daytime running lights. N8 also adds an electrochromic inside mirror, smart entry with push-button start and a rear wiper and washer.

Inside, N6 uses an 8-inch touchscreen. N8 has a 10.25-inch navigation touchscreen and Bose audio, along with Bluelink connectivity. A wireless phone charger and red ambient lighting are also listed for N8. These are cabin upgrades; the published engine output does not rise with the screen size.

Both trims retain automatic climate control, rear AC vents, cruise control and tilt-and-telescopic steering adjustment. For a household judging the car as everyday transport, those shared items deserve attention alongside the more conspicuous screen and lighting changes. A showroom comparison should include time in the rear seat as well as time behind the wheel.

For the N8 display, the brochure qualifies wireless smartphone connectivity as working through a wired-to-wireless adapter. Check that arrangement with your own phone during a demonstration, rather than assuming every screen offers the same connection method.

Who it is for

The i20 N Line is relevant to drivers who want the turbo engine and the N Line hardware in a hatchback measuring under four metres long. N6 keeps that basic proposition; N8 places more emphasis on navigation, lighting and convenience. This is an equipment-based assessment, rather than a road-test verdict on steering feel or ride comfort.

Its combination of hatchback dimensions and a shared engine makes the trim choice unusually focused: decide which controls and cabin features you will use, then settle the gearbox.
