Google tests Flipkart Buy button inside Gemini in India

BENGALURU / NEW DELHI: Google has begun a limited India test that lets some Gemini and AI Mode users buy select Flipkart products without leaving the chat. A Buy control appears on certain Flipkart listings for smartphones, electronics and mobile accessories, then opens a Flipkart checkout flow inside the AI interface.

The experiment is not live for every account. People outside the test still see Flipkart product cards in Gemini answers, but without a direct purchase path. Rival marketplace listings that surface in the same answers do not currently show the same Buy control in the trial build that was reviewed.

A Google spokesperson said the company is "always testing new features and experiences to help people discover and connect with businesses more easily," and declined to share further rollout details. Google regularly runs product experiments and treats this as one of them.

What the test actually does

In the trial, a user asks Gemini or AI Mode about a phone, earbud or accessory. When a Flipkart listing qualifies, a Buy button appears. Tapping it brings up a Flipkart-branded checkout rather than sending the shopper to a separate browser tab first. Payment and delivery still follow Flipkart's own checkout rules, including offers and inventory checks.

That design differs from the Google-hosted checkout Google described earlier for its Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard meant to let AI agents move from discovery to payment with retailers. Flipkart is among the India merchants Google has publicly linked to agentic shopping work. Whether this Flipkart-branded Buy path uses UCP under the hood is not clear from the test alone.

Google invested about $350 million in Flipkart in 2024 as a minority stakeholder. The companies already work together on search and shopping surfaces. A checkout button inside Gemini deepens that commercial link just as India's festive e-commerce season approaches.

Timing and what Indian shoppers should expect

People familiar with the plan say a wider rollout is aimed for later in October, ahead of the main festive sales windows. Google has not published an India-wide date, eligibility list or product catalogue. Availability can change without notice while the experiment runs.

For now, Indian users who do not see Buy should treat Gemini as a discovery tool only. Those who do see it should still verify price, bank offers, exchange value and delivery pin code on the Flipkart checkout screen before paying. AI shopping flows can lag live inventory, especially when sales traffic spikes.

The test sits inside a broader industry push to turn chatbots into transaction agents. Google and other AI platforms are adding commerce hooks so users can move from a product question to a paid order in fewer taps. India's mix of UPI, large marketplace apps and festive demand makes it a natural proving ground.

Nothing in the current trial turns Gemini into a full Flipkart storefront. The catalogue is narrow, the audience is limited, and Google has not promised feature parity with the Flipkart app. Shoppers who need returns, order tracking or complex exchange stacks will still lean on Flipkart's own channels after purchase.
