Health authorities and doctors in Varanasi have issued a cautionary note as the monsoon season progresses, warning that dengue cases could increase in the coming weeks due to expected rainfall and rising humidity levels.
While no major outbreak of dengue has been reported in the city so far this year, officials say the combination of intermittent rains, waterlogging, and high humidity creates favourable conditions for mosquito breeding. The risk typically peaks during and after the monsoon months.
The district administration had already conducted a month-long communicable disease control campaign throughout July, focusing on dengue, malaria, and other vector-borne diseases. The drive included fogging, anti-larval spraying, drain cleaning, and door-to-door awareness under the Dastak campaign.
Doctors note that even though confirmed dengue numbers remain low at present, the pattern seen in previous years and current weather forecasts suggest a possible rise. Heavy rain alerts have been issued for Varanasi and parts of Purvanchal in the next few days, which could further increase the risk if stagnant water is not cleared promptly.
What residents should do:
Eliminate all sources of stagnant water around homes, including coolers, flower pots, discarded containers, and rooftops.
Use mosquito nets and repellents, especially during early morning and evening hours.
Seek medical attention immediately in case of high fever, severe body pain, headache, or rash.
Ensure children and elderly family members take extra precautions.
Health officials emphasise that timely prevention is far more effective than treatment after infection. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and report any unusual symptoms early.
