BHU to Sign MoUs With Private Hospitals for Staff Treatment at CGHS Rates

Varanasi, June 29, 2026: Banaras Hindu University has reportedly decided to sign Memorandums of Understanding with selected private hospitals so that teachers, employees and eligible beneficiaries can receive treatment at CGHS rates.
The move is expected to reduce the financial burden faced by staff members who earlier had to pay private hospital rates and then seek reimbursement as per university or CGHS-linked rules.
Reports said the decision followed approval from BHU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi and recommendations of a university committee. Dalimss News could not independently locate the full official notification, so detailed eligibility rules are not being treated as final in this report.
Health Benefit Push for BHU Staff
The proposed arrangement is aimed at improving access to treatment for BHU teachers and employees. Reports also said the wider beneficiary group may include family members and pensioners, depending on rules notified by the university.
CGHS rates are standardised rates used under the Central Government Health Scheme. If private hospitals agree to provide treatment at such rates through MoUs, the out-of-pocket burden for beneficiaries may be lower than under normal private tariffs.
Private Hospitals to Be Empanelled
The university has reportedly invited applications from private hospitals and identified around 40 major hospitals for possible agreement. The arrangement may cover selected hospitals in Varanasi as well as hospitals outside the city, including major centres such as the National Capital Region and state capitals.
Reports said the panel of hospitals will be updated on BHU's official website. Until that list is published and verified, beneficiaries should rely only on official BHU instructions before seeking treatment under the proposed arrangement.
Who Could Benefit
The reported plan could benefit serving employees, their family members and pensioners, especially those who live away from Varanasi or require specialised care not immediately available through university-linked facilities.
However, Dalimss News is not publishing unverified referral rules as advice. Eligibility, referral requirements, emergency treatment provisions and reimbursement procedures should be checked from the final BHU notification or designated university office.
Official Panel Details Awaited
The arrangement is reportedly expected to be valid initially for three years from the date of each MoU. It remains to be seen which hospitals sign agreements, what departments are covered and how claims will be processed.
For health coverage within a major public university, the move could become an important staff welfare measure. The next key step is the publication of the official hospital panel and standard operating procedure.
