Dr NP Singh Appointed Varanasi CMO; New Heads Named for Two District Hospitals

VARANASI: Dr Narendra Pratap Singh, widely known in the city’s health administration as Dr NP Singh, has been appointed the new Chief Medical Officer of Varanasi under the latest government posting order. The change places an administrator with previous experience inside both the municipal and divisional health systems at the centre of a district facing a demanding mix of hospital management, disease surveillance and monsoon preparedness.

Before the appointment, Singh was serving as Joint Director of Medical, Health and Family Welfare for the Mirzapur division. He earlier spent several years as the Municipal Health Officer of the Varanasi Municipal Corporation, a role that put him close to sanitation-linked public-health work, urban disease control and coordination between civic and medical teams. Colleagues have described him as a strict administrator, a reputation that will now be tested across a much larger district network.

Singh also handled additional responsibility as acting CMO during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the then chief medical officer, Dr VB Singh, tested positive. That period required daily coordination across hospitals, testing facilities and field teams while the health system was under exceptional pressure. His return to the CMO’s office comes in a full-time leadership role rather than as an emergency arrangement.

The government order relieves Dr Mukesh Kumar from the Varanasi CMO post. Kumar had taken charge on 2 June 2026, making his tenure comparatively brief. The order cited in the Dalimss News Banaras report does not state his next posting. Until a subsequent posting order is issued, speculation about where he may be moved would be premature.

Two other administrative changes affect major government hospitals in the district. Dr Satyaprakash Mishra, a senior consultant at Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay District Hospital, has been appointed to lead that institution. At Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital in Ramnagar, senior consultant Dr Praveen Ranjan has been appointed Chief Medical Superintendent. The appointments place serving clinicians in charge of facilities that handle a substantial share of Varanasi’s public-sector patient load.

For residents, the significance of these postings will be measured less by the order itself than by what follows: medicine availability, staff attendance, emergency response, referral systems and shorter delays for tests and treatment. The CMO also plays a central role in immunisation, communicable-disease surveillance and coordination with community health centres. During the monsoon, dengue and other fever cases add urgency to that routine work.

Singh takes charge at a moment when patients expect public hospitals to be both clinically dependable and administratively responsive. His municipal experience may help bridge health and sanitation work, but the immediate challenge is execution across institutions with different workloads and constraints. The three appointments reset the leadership table; their public value will become visible in the quality and consistency of services delivered from the CMO office to hospital wards and neighbourhood health teams.
