ABHA card benefits centre on linking, accessing and sharing your health records through a unique 14 digit health account number. Creating an ABHA does not by itself make you eligible for Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY treatment cover or put money into an account. The government describes it as a way to connect medical records with your informed consent. Its usefulness depends on the records linked and the healthcare providers participating in the system.

What are the benefits of an ABHA card?

The Health Ministry's official ABHA explainer describes a health identity that helps connect prescriptions, laboratory reports and other records. Rather than relying only on separate paper files, a patient can use compatible personal health record services to access linked information. The practical benefit is continuity when moving between providers, especially when a clinician needs to understand earlier investigations or treatment.

The number and the address have different roles. The ABHA number is the identifier, while the ABHA address is a username, such as one ending in @abdm, used for accessing and sharing records. Printing the number on a card makes it easier to carry, but the printout is not what creates insurance entitlement. It is useful to know both identifiers when asking a hospital to find or link your records.

Registration at participating facilities can also be easier. The government explainer describes QR-based generation of outpatient registration tokens through compatible services. This should not be read as a guarantee of an immediate consultation, priority treatment or access at every hospital. A registration token handles one part of the visit; clinical triage, appointments and the hospital's service arrangements still determine what happens next.

Does ABHA provide Rs 5 lakh treatment cover?

No automatic PM-JAY entitlement follows from creating ABHA. The ministry's explainer explicitly separates the health account from eligibility for a particular scheme, including PM-JAY. This matters because searches for an ABHA benefits amount can confuse a health identifier with the separate financial protection programme. An ABHA number should not be presented to a family as proof that hospital bills will be paid.

How to create ABHA and what details are needed

The NIC public ABHA creation page shows an Aadhaar-based route. Its displayed sequence asks for Aadhaar details, a security check, verification through an OTP sent to the Aadhaar-linked number, a number to link to ABHA and an ABHA address. Read the consent declaration before proceeding. Follow the live official screen because registration routes and interface labels can change.

The ministry says individuals can generate the health identifier free of cost. Its explainer does not describe a national income threshold for creating the number. Nor does it attach an application closing date to this general service. Someone offering a guaranteed financial benefit in exchange for creating ABHA is making a different claim from what the official health account description says.

An assisted route may also be available at participating facilities. A JIPMER release dated 23 October 2025, for example, describes free on-site registration and printing using Aadhaar and the linked number for OTP verification. That is a documented institutional service, rather than evidence that every hospital has identical counters or hours. Ask your chosen facility what assistance it currently provides before visiting specifically for registration.

Who can see records linked with ABHA?

The official explainer says sharing is based on the patient's consent, and consent can cover selected records rather than every document linked to the account. Read a request carefully and identify the provider and records concerned. The ability to link reports does not mean each new doctor should automatically receive your complete history. Where a consent screen is unclear, ask the facility to explain it before accepting.

The ministry also explains that medical records remain with the providers where they were created. ABDM facilitates exchange between systems, while registry information needed for identification and interoperability is held centrally. Linking records is therefore different from uploading every hospital's complete archive into one central medical file. A missing report may require the originating facility to check whether it was created and linked correctly.

Can ABHA be used in private hospitals?

Yes, the ministry says it can be used outside government hospitals, but private providers decide whether to participate. Ask the hospital whether its services support ABHA and which records it can supply. The NIC page also describes voluntary participation and the ability to request temporary deactivation or permanent deletion of the number. For help, consult the official ABDM FAQs, which list assistance through 1800 11 4477 or 14477 and the ABDM grievance service.
