In a significant step toward improving rural infrastructure, Varanasi is set to roll out a new mini bus service aimed at connecting remote villages directly to the district headquarters. The initiative, scheduled to begin from April 28, is expected to ease daily travel for thousands of residents living in far-flung rural areas.

The transport authorities have approved a total of 77 mini buses under the Chief Minister’s Rural Transport Service scheme. Allocation letters have already been issued to operators, signaling that the project is in its final phase of implementation. These buses, with seating capacities ranging from 15 to 28 passengers, will operate across multiple rural routes, significantly reducing dependency on multiple transfers and long waiting times.

One of the key features of this scheme is the operational flexibility granted to vehicle owners. Operators will have the freedom to determine their schedules and frequency of trips based on local demand. However, to ensure consistent service, each bus will be required to complete a minimum of two trips daily to every designated Gram Panchayat. Additionally, the government has eased regulatory hurdles by exempting these buses from traditional route permit requirements, making it simpler for operators to participate.

Beyond improving connectivity, the initiative is also expected to create employment opportunities in the region. Operators have been offered 10-year contracts, providing long-term financial stability and encouraging investment in rural transport services.

If implemented effectively, the mini bus service could prove to be a game-changer for rural mobility in Varanasi. By strengthening the link between villages and urban centers, the scheme aims to support economic growth, improve access to essential services, and enhance the overall quality of life for rural residents.
