VARANASI, INDIA — The historic city of Varanasi was bathed in intense spiritual energy as thousands of devotees gathered to witness the 72nd Grand Procession (Shobha Yatra) of Kashi's legendary celestial guardian, Baba Kaal Bhairav.

Organized under the aegis of the Swarnakar Kshatriya Committee of Varanasi, this annual event celebrates the magnificent gold-and-silver Panchbadan (five-faced) idol of the deity. The holy city echoed with thunderous chants of "Har Har Mahadev" and "Jai Kaal Bhairav" as the grand procession made its way through Varanasi's historic, winding alleyways.

The Legacy of Kashi's Kotwal

In Hindu cosmology and local folklore, Baba Kaal Bhairav is revered as the Kotwal (the police chief or administrative guardian) of Varanasi. According to ancient legends from the Kashi Khand of the Skanda Purana, Lord Shiva appointed Kaal Bhairav to maintain spiritual law, protect the city's borders, and grant spiritual clearance to travelers and residents alike.

A pilgrimage to Varanasi is traditionally considered incomplete without visiting the Kaal Bhairav Temple to seek his permission to enter or exit the holy city.

Key Highlights of the 72nd Grand Procession

The 2026 procession marked 72 years since the creation of the sacred gold-and-silver Panchbadan idol in 1954. This year's celebration reached unprecedented levels of grandeur, featuring:

  • The Sacred Route: Starting from the historic Kath ki Haveli in Chaukhamha, the procession moved through key cultural zones including Jatanbar, Vishweshwarganj, Maidagin, and Chowk, before culminating at the main Kaal Bhairav Temple.

  • Divine Tableaux (Jhankis): Spectators were treated to beautifully decorated chariots carrying living tableaux of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Radha-Krishna, and the various fierce manifestations of Bhairav.

  • Thunderous Rhythms: Dozens of Damru groups (traditional drum ensembles) and brass bands accompanied the procession, setting a mystical, high-energy rhythm that had devotees dancing in spiritual ecstasy.

  • Sovereign Honors: In keeping with centuries-old traditions, police personnel and local authorities paid their respects to Kashi's ultimate lawkeeper as the procession marched past.
