VARANASI: More than 1,200 school athletes from across Uttar Pradesh have assembled at the Baralalpur sports complex for the 70th state school handball championship, turning the city into a five-day meeting point for some of the state’s most promising young players.

The tournament began on Friday and will continue until August 25. Teams from 18 divisions are competing in boys’ and girls’ sections across sub-junior, junior and senior age groups. Vikas Inter College has been given responsibility for hosting the competition, while MLC Dharmendra Rai formally opened the event, according to the organisers’ account reported on Friday.

The size of the field makes this more than a routine inter-school fixture. A state event tests players against unfamiliar defensive systems, quicker transitions and the pressure of representing an entire division. For many competitors, the week in Varanasi will also be their first sustained exposure to a tournament in which recovery, nutrition and discipline between matches matter almost as much as the minutes spent on court.

Handball is a fast game built around movement, timing and contact. Short matches can swing when a side concedes two quick counterattacks or loses a player to a suspension. Coaches will therefore be watching more than goals: they will be assessing decision-making, defensive communication, goalkeeper positioning and whether young athletes can keep their shape late in a contest.

Hosting more than 1,200 children also places a substantial duty on the local organisers. Drinking water, first aid, safe transport, clean changing areas and a clear match schedule need to work throughout the championship. August humidity can drain players quickly, particularly those playing multiple rounds, so adequate rest intervals and medical supervision are essential rather than optional extras.

The competition gives Varanasi schools and coaches a useful look at the wider standard of the sport in Uttar Pradesh. It also offers local spectators a chance to see handball beyond the brief slot it often receives during annual school games. A good state meet can help the sport grow only if the excitement is followed by regular coaching, usable courts and enough competitive fixtures after teams return home.

Results over the next five days will identify the strongest sides in each age group, but the broader value of the event will be measured in participation. A sub-junior player who learns to manage a difficult match, or a school that decides to invest in a girls’ team after seeing this field, may represent a longer-lasting gain than the final medal table.

The championship runs through August 25 at Baralalpur. Families planning to attend should confirm the day’s fixture list with organisers because match timings can shift as knockout rounds develop. For the players, Varanasi is now the stage; the next few days will show which divisions have built not only talented squads, but the depth and composure required at state level.
