VARANASI: The Varanasi Municipal Corporation (Nagar Nigam) has swung into action following a public outcry over a viral video allegedly showing the 'Vivekananda Cruise' discharging sewage into the holy River Ganges.

Nagar Nigam Forms Inquiry Committee: Taking serious cognizance of the matter, the Nagar Nigam has constituted a special investigation committee.

Mandate: The committee is tasked with verifying the authenticity of the video and inspecting the cruise's waste disposal mechanisms.

Objective: They will determine if the discharge was indeed untreated sewage or compliant effluent. The committee has been directed to submit its report at the earliest.

The Controversy: Local boatmen recorded and circulated a video claiming that the luxury cruise was dumping untreated fecal waste directly into the river, violating religious sentiments and environmental norms. They alleged that while small boatmen face strict scrutiny, big operators often flaunt rules. The District Magistrate has also ordered a strict probe, stating there will be "zero tolerance" for polluting the Ganga.

Operator Denies Charges: The operator of the Vivekananda Cruise has dismissed the allegations, stating that the liquid seen in the video was "normal water" and not sewage. They claimed the vessel is equipped with a modern Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and follows all environmental standards.
