Varanasi is set to witness a significant push in urban development as the Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) has proposed the development of three new townships in Madhani, Ganjari, and Kallipur. For this, an estimated budget of ₹1,700 crore has been allocated, aiming to accelerate residential and integrated development in these areas.

The VDA has also approved a proposed budget of ₹2,866.20 crore for the financial year 2026–27, which has been sent to the state government for final approval. The budget is expected to be cleared in the upcoming board meeting scheduled later this month. According to officials, an income of ₹2,070.61 crore is projected from operations, marking a substantial increase compared to the previous financial year. Similarly, the expenditure is estimated at ₹2,069.07 crore, reflecting a major rise in planned developmental activities.

With the recent expansion of the city limits, Varanasi’s development area has increased from 793 square kilometers to 1,073 square kilometers, incorporating 215 additional revenue villages. Keeping this expansion in mind, the budget focuses on planned urban growth, including road construction, sewer systems, drainage, housing schemes, and township development. A significant portion of revenue is expected to come from land sales and compensation, contributing over ₹1,200 crore.

Officials believe that this proposed budget and the planned townships will play a crucial role in shaping Varanasi’s future by strengthening infrastructure and supporting its rapid urban expansion. However, the real impact will depend on how effectively these plans are implemented on the ground in the coming years.
