Varanasi’s First Two-Way Golgadda Underpass Opens, Railway Gate No. 24 Closed Permanently

Varanasi: In a significant step toward improving urban mobility, the city’s first two-way underpass at Golgadda Underpass was officially opened to the public on the night of March 30. The 400-meter-long infrastructure project is expected to provide major relief to daily commuters who previously faced long delays due to railway crossings in the area.
With the underpass now operational, Railway Gate No. 24 (Special) has been permanently closed. For years, this railway gate was known as a major traffic bottleneck where vehicles had to wait for long periods whenever trains passed. The new underpass eliminates that delay, allowing uninterrupted movement of traffic.
The project also significantly improves connectivity for commuters traveling toward several key areas of the city, including Jalalpur, Panchkosi, Ashapur, and the historic Buddhist site of Sarnath.
Officials believe that the underpass will play a crucial role in reducing congestion across this busy corridor and improving the overall traffic flow in the northern parts of the city. By removing the railway crossing barrier, vehicles can now move continuously, saving both time and fuel for commuters.
Local residents and regular travelers have welcomed the development, describing it as a long-awaited solution to one of the area’s most persistent traffic problems. The improved route is also expected to benefit tourists visiting Sarnath, making their journey smoother and faster.
With the opening of the Golgadda underpass, Varanasi continues to see gradual improvements in infrastructure aimed at easing traffic congestion and enhancing connectivity across the historic city.
