Varanasi Road Package Targets Daily Choke Points Beyond The Big Corridors

VARANASI: A fresh road package due to be formally launched on Sunday is aimed less at producing one headline structure and more at repairing the city’s everyday map of bottlenecks. The programme covers highway stretches, neighbourhood links and railway crossings that routinely slow commuters long before they reach the old city.

Two completed works are listed for inauguration: the widening and strengthening of the Varanasi–Bhadohi road and the Chhitauni–Shool Tankeshwar road. The Hardattpur railway overbridge is also part of the inauguration list, with the government presenting it as a measure to ease pressure on the Mohan Sarai–Adalpura route.

The next set of works will begin at the foundation-stone stage. Corridors named in the official programme include Dalmandi, Lahartara–Kotwa, Gangapur and Babatpur. Railway overbridges are planned at level crossing 22C and Khalispur Yard. Each location carries a different traffic problem: Dalmandi is an old commercial pocket, Babatpur is tied to airport-side movement, while the rail crossings affect residents whose travel time can change every time a gate comes down.

That spread matters. Varanasi’s congestion is rarely one continuous jam. It is a chain of short, unpredictable delays around crossings, narrow market roads, school-hour traffic, wedding-season movement and the arrival of pilgrims. A widened road can save time on paper, but its local value depends on junction design, drainage, pedestrian space and whether roadside parking is managed after construction.

The package will therefore be watched at street level, not only through sanctioned figures. Shopkeepers along widening stretches will want clarity on access during work. Residents near proposed overbridges will look for safe service lanes and crossings. Bus, auto and e-rickshaw drivers will need diversion plans that do not simply push traffic into residential lanes.

Monsoon execution is another practical test. Open excavations, loose material and incomplete drains can turn a road improvement into a difficult season for nearby households. Agencies will need visible barricading, night reflectors and a realistic sequence for utility shifting before carriageways are opened up.

Sunday’s ceremony will mark an administrative start or formal handover, depending on the project. It will not answer questions about completion dates, contractor performance or maintenance. Those details should become clearer once work orders and location-wise schedules move into the public domain.

For Varanasi, the useful measure will be simple: whether a resident travelling from a village road, an airport-side corridor or a railway crossing can complete an ordinary journey with fewer forced pauses. Big infrastructure changes the skyline. These smaller links decide how the city actually feels at 9 in the morning.
