Varanasi Police Wins Praise After Swiftly Intervening as Bihar NTPC Aspirant is Overcharged by Local Vendor

VARANASI — In a reassuring display of prompt community policing, the Varanasi local police intervened to assist a distressed student from Bihar who was allegedly cheated by a street food vendor ahead of his competitive examination.
The incident has sparked widespread appreciation on social media for the police, while simultaneously renewing concerns about the fair treatment of thousands of outstation candidates arriving in the city for major national exams.
The Incident: Exploitation Near the Exam Centre
The matter came to light when an NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation) examination aspirant, traveling all the way from Bihar, stopped at a roadside food stall near his designated examination center for a quick meal.
According to the student's complaint:
The Overcharge: The items he consumed were valued at a standard rate of approximately ₹20.
The Demand: Upon finishing his meal, the vendor aggressively demanded a staggering ₹120—six times the actual worth.
The Forced Payment: Despite the student raising strong objections to the blatant price gouging, the vendor forcibly took the money, leaving the young candidate deeply distressed and financially strained just hours before his crucial exam.
Swift Action by Varanasi Police
Distraught and anxious, the student brought the matter to the attention of nearby police personnel. Recognizing the vulnerability of an outstation student under exam pressure, Station House Officer (SHO) Shivakant Mishra took immediate command of the situation.
SHO Mishra and his team confronted the vendor on-site, addressing the student's grievances on the spot and initiating strict administrative steps to penalize the exploitative behavior. The quick intervention ensured the candidate could proceed to his examination hall with a clear mind.
