Varanasi DM Cracks Down on Alaknanda Cruise: Irregularities Lead to ₹5,000 Fine

In a move to ensure the strict enforcement of safety and environmental protocols on the River Ganga, the District Magistrate (DM) of Varanasi has imposed a financial penalty of ₹5,000 on the operators of the Alaknanda Cruise. The action follows a series of complaints regarding violations of prescribed operational norms.
Administrative Action and Lapses Official sources confirmed that the district administration initiated a review after reports of irregularities surfaced during the cruise's daily operations. Upon investigation, the authorities identified several lapses in compliance with the standard operating procedures (SOPs).
The monetary penalty was issued as per existing regulations to serve as a deterrent. The DM emphasized that no operator, regardless of scale, is exempt from the rules designed to protect the sanctity and safety of the Ganga.
Directives for Future Operations The District Magistrate has issued a stern warning to the cruise management, directing them to prioritize the following areas:
Cleanliness & Waste Management: Strict adherence to protocols to prevent river pollution.
Safety Standards: Ensuring all passenger safety equipment and navigational guidelines are up to date.
Environmental Compliance: Maintaining standards that do not disturb the ecological balance of the river.
"The administration is committed to maintaining the sanctity of the Holy Ganga. Regular monitoring and surprise inspections will continue to ensure that public sentiments are respected and government regulations are followed to the letter," stated an official spokesperson.
Warning of Stricter Penalties The administration has made it clear that this fine serves as a preliminary warning. Should the operators fail to rectify the reported issues or repeat similar violations, the cruise service could face stricter legal action, including the potential suspension of its operating license.
