A businessman from the Sigra area of Varanasi was cheated of Rs 9.84 lakh in a cyber fraud case on the pretext of earning profits in online business. The victim, Haunsla Prasad Mishra, said he received a call from an unknown number, where the caller claimed to be associated with an online product-selling company and promised 15 percent profit.

After nearly two months of communication, the fraudster convinced the businessman to invest money. Between June 16 and June 19, the victim transferred the amount in five installments through RTGS and online payment methods to a bank account provided by the caller. However, neither the promised profit nor the invested amount was returned, and the accused later switched off his mobile phone.

Sigra police have registered a case against unknown persons and started an investigation. Officials said efforts are underway to trace the accused and take further legal action.
